NYC parents and educators will convene and present ideas for re-opening schools tomorrow Saturday, Jun. 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at a conference entitled, Sharing Ideas & Solutions for Reopening Schools: The Path Forward. The event will be held remotely, co-sponsored by Class Size Matters, NYC Kids PAC, and Community Education Councils from Districts 4, 8 (Bronx), 14, 17 and 32.

During this conference, NYC parents, guardians, teachers and concerned New Yorkers will discuss and develop proposals around the reopening of schools in the fall and present them to invited decision-makers. If schools are to reopen, it must be done the right way to ensure health and safety of students and staff and to maximize their academic and emotional support.

The Governor and the Mayor have appointed advisory boards on reopening schools, but with few parents or NYC educators included.

The conference will be structured in the following manner:

11:00 AM – 11:15 AM: Naila Rosario, President of NYC Kids PAC, will explain structure and goals of the meeting and introduce facilitators.  (15-20 min)

11:15 AM – 12:00 noon:  Breakout groups will discuss and develop proposals. (~45 min.)

12:00 noon – 12:10 PM The results of our online survey of 390 respondents will be presented.

12:10 PM – 1:00 PM: Participants will reconvene to present the ideas developed during the break-out sessions to select decision-makers.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
