New York City Department of Sanitation has announced a special leaf collection schedule for City residents. Instead of decomposing in a landfill, the collected leaves will be turned into renewable energy or compost, and added to soil to nourish street trees, soil and parks. The department will collect leaves in paper leaf bags, unlined containers or curbside composting bins. Department officials advise residents not to use plastic bags.

Residents in Areas with Curbside Composting

Department officials said residents currently receiving a curbside composting service already have a leaf collection service in place. Residents should simply place their leaves in their brown bins, in paper leaf bags, or in unlined rigid containers, at the curb for pick-up according to their regular curbside composting collection schedule. Plastic bags should not be used.

Residents in Many Other Areas

Residents should set out their leaves in a paper leaf bag or an open, unlined container. Plastic bags should not be used.

Residents living in Bronx Community Boards: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
