New York City Department of Sanitation has announced a special leaf collection schedule for City residents. Instead of decomposing in a landfill, the collected leaves will be turned into renewable energy or compost, and added to soil to nourish street trees, soil and parks. The department will collect leaves in paper leaf bags, unlined containers or curbside composting bins. Department officials advise residents not to use plastic bags.
Residents in Areas with Curbside Composting
Department officials said residents currently receiving a curbside composting service already have a leaf collection service in place. Residents should simply place their leaves in their brown bins, in paper leaf bags, or in unlined rigid containers, at the curb for pick-up according to their regular curbside composting collection schedule. Plastic bags should not be used.
Residents in Many Other Areas
Residents should set out their leaves in a paper leaf bag or an open, unlined container. Plastic bags should not be used.
Residents living in Bronx Community Boards: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
Set out your leaves at the curb after 4 p.m. the night before these days:
Sunday, Nov. 27 and Sunday, Dec. 11

Make Compost, Not Trash!
New York City Department of Sanitation is encouraging New Yorkers to make compost, not trash, by using their buildings’ brown bins to deposit food scraps. For more information, see attached flier above.
