Award-winning New York City musicians Norah Jones and Suzanne Vega will perform on Jun. 22 as part of “Music for the Soul of NYC Health + Hospital Heroes,” a series created by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, NYC Health + Hospitals and AFM Local 802.

The event will be streamed live on NYC Health + Hospital’s Facebook page on Jun. 22, 2020 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. ET.

The “Music for the Soul” series was created to inspire our heroic medical community, especially the 43,000-member staff of NYC’s public hospital system, connect isolated patients to the outside world, and provide paid work for musicians who may be struggling financially. The musical series, which takes place daily from midday to 1:00 p.m., runs through Jul. 4, 2020.

Performance dates for well-known musicians including Questlove, AJR, Peter Yarrow (formerly of Peter Paul and Mary) and Marshall Crenshaw will be announced in the coming days.

Funded by the Laurie M Tisch Illumination Fund, the series features daily performances on Facebook Live by a variety of professional NYC musicians (the majority from AFM Local 802) performing songs that have been requested by both health workers and patients at NYC public hospitals, as well the musicians’ personal selections.

Playing from home, the musicians also perform songs that local hospitals have used to celebrate patients successfully coming off ventilators. More information about the series can be found at https://www1.nyc.gov/site/mome/news/05202020-music-for-the-soul.page.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
