Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark, NYC Mayor Eric Adams, and NYC Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch announced on June 23 that 19 alleged gang members and associates have been indicted for a murder and a dozen shootings that wounded three bystanders and terrorized residents in Claremont, Belmont, and other Bronx neighborhoods.

 

“Two street gangs, 9Raq and Thirdside, showed a callous disregard for human life by firing their weapons in broad daylight, on busy sidewalks,” Clark said. “Yet again, we are talking about adolescents being killed or facing prison if they are convicted of this violence. We must find solutions. I cannot abide losing a generation this way. I call on Mayor Adams and every stakeholder in this city to put in the resources now.”

 

Clark said the defendants are variously charged in a 208-count indictment which includes charges of second degree murder, second degree attempted murder, first degree manslaughter, second degree manslaughter, first degree assault, second degree assault, third degree assault, first degree gang assault, second degree gang assault, first degree attempted assault, second degree attempted assault, first degree robbery, second degree robbery, third degree robbery, second degree burglary, and third degree burglary.

 

She said it also includes first degree criminal use of a firearm, second degree criminal use of a firearm, second degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, first degree conspiracy, second degree conspiracy, third degree conspiracy, fourth degree conspiracy, third degree criminal sale of a firearm, fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon, and first degree reckless endangerment, second degree reckless endangerment, fifth degree criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny, possession of ammunition, and fourth degree grand larceny.

 

The district attorney said detectives of the NYPD Gun Violence Suppression Division/Bronx Violence Reduction Task Force and Bronx Warrant Squad arrested six of the defendants on June 18, and four of them were arraigned before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Rosenblueth. She said a fifth defendant was arraigned on June 20 before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Guy Mitchell, and a sixth defendant is awaiting arraignment.

 

Clark said four defendants have not yet been apprehended and ten other defendants are already in custody on other cases and will be arraigned on a later date. She said the incidents outlined in the indictment occurred between May 2021 and May 2025. According to the investigation, the defendants allegedly carried out 12 shootings, including one fatal.

For his part, the mayor said from upstream interventions to downstream solutions, the City was delivering every day to keep New Yorkers safe. “Our administration has a 360-degree approach to public safety and the results speak for themselves, yet another long-term investigation resulting in the seizure of 15 more firearms and the indictment of 19 individuals on a variety of serious felony charges, including murder.”

 

He added, “Our relentless focus on violent crime has resulted in record low shootings and homicides for the first five months of the year, and major crime is down over six percent. I want to thank the men and women of the NYPD Gun Violence Suppression Division and the Bronx District Attorney’s Office for their commitment and dedication to keeping our city safe.”

 

In the aftermath of some of their alleged acts, Clark said the defendants would brag about them on social media. She said last month a Thirdside defendant posted a drill rap music video to his Instagram admitting he took part in a shootout with 9Raq in March, in which at least 17 shots were fired, none hitting the rivals but one bullet grazing a passerby. “I don’t know how we missed them,” he said.

 

She said the 9Raq crew operated from East 169th Street to East 170th Street in the Claremont Village area and Morris Avenue to Teller Avenue, west of Claremont Park, while Thirdside claimed East 183rd Street to East 185th Street between Crotona Avenue and Southern Boulevard as their territory in Belmont.

 

Clark said that on Sept. 25, 2022, two of the defendants, members of Thirdside, were riding on a moped looking for rival gang members on East 180th Street and they fired three shots, one of which struck a 75-year-old man in the thigh. She said on June 2, 2023, alleged 9Raq member Nixon Rodriguez was fatally shot by a member of his own crew during a shooting on Olinville Avenue, as reported by Norwood News at the time, which the gang described as a failed retaliatory mission inside rival gang territory.

 

For her part, Tisch said, “These defendants allegedly treated our neighborhoods like battlegrounds, firing guns on busy streets, striking innocent bystanders, and bragging about it on social media.”

 

She continued, “Their violence showed no regard for human life. But thanks to a relentless investigation by the NYPD’s Gun Violence Suppression Division and our partners in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, their reign of terror is over. We will never stop going after the gangs that terrorize our communities, and we will hold them accountable for every single bullet they fire.”

The case is being prosecuted by Edward Christian Uy, deputy chief of Rikers Island Prosecution, Bureau, Assistant District Attorney Lily Gebru of the Violent Criminal Enterprise Bureau, and Assistant District Attorney Jonathon Sizemore of the Public Integrity Bureau, under the supervision of Newton Mendys, chief of the Violent Criminal Enterprise Bureau, and under the overall supervision of Denise Kodjo, deputy chief of the Investigations Division, and Wanda Perez-Maldonado, chief of the Investigations Division.

 

Clark thanked Mary Jo Blanchard, counsel to the investigations division, Keturah Ladd, deputy chief of the Violent Criminal Enterprise Bureau, Stephen Russo, supervisor in the Violent Criminal Enterprise Bureau, James McCann, intelligence analyst with the Crime Strategies Bureau, Victor Ortiz, Karina Johnson and Netanya Pierrot, trial prep assistants with the investigations division, Selena Ley, laboratory director with the Digital Forensics Lab, and Peter Kennedy, chief of the Technical Investigations Bureau, for their work on the investigation.

She also thanked the NYPD Gun Violence Suppression Division, specifically NYPD Detectives Patriciann Caputo, Christine Vargas, Brandon Ravelo, members of the 42nd Precinct, the 44th Precinct, the 47th Precinct, and the 48th Precinct Detective Squads, the Bronx Warrant Squad, and Correction Officer Investigator Jeffrey Rios of New York City Department of Correction for their work.

As reported, the mayor, the police commissioner and the district attorney announced in April that 20 alleged members of the “800 YGz” gang had been charged with a conspiracy of violence, including a murder and 14 non-fatal shootings that they said turned the West Farms neighborhood in The Bronx into a shooting gallery.
