MTA to Perform Switch Replacement Work on B, D, F, M Lines between May and July

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced on Sunday, April 30, that switch replacement work will begin on the bdf and m Sixth Avenue lines. These switches near West 4th Street in Manhattan will allow the bdf and m trains to move between the uptown local and express tracks. As a result, there will be changes to service on the abcdf and m lines beginning Monday, May 15, at 5 a.m. through Monday, July 3, at 5 a.m.

 

The MTA advises customers of the following service impacts:

Between May 15 and July 3, customers should expect their uptown commutes on the bdf and m lines to take an additional two minutes. There will also be one less f train operating during the morning rush hour, two fewer f trains and one less m train operating during the afternoon rush. In addition, F-Diamond (express) trains, which normally operate express between Church Avenue and Jay Street in Brooklyn, will operate local during this period.

 

Weekend Impacts

During this period, during three weekends i.e. from Friday, May 26, at 11:45 p.m. to Tuesday, May 30 at 5 a.m., and from Friday, June 2, at 11:45 p.m. to Tuesday, June 5, at 5 a.m. and from Friday, June 16, at 11:45 p.m. to Monday, June 19, at 5 a.m., there will be no Bronx-bound d service on Sixth Avenue between West 4th Street and 59th Street-Columbus Circle in Manhattan.

 

Neither will there be a Queens-bound f service on Sixth Avenue between West 4th Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Queens. F trains will operate express as normal in Queens. Uptown d trains will be rerouted via the c in Manhattan between West 4th Street and 145th Street, and uptown f trains will be rerouted via the e between West 4th Street and Queens.

 

  • Northbound f trains will run local on the Eighth Avenue line between West 4th Street and Roosevelt Avenue/Jackson Heights in Manhattan/Queens
  • Northbound d trains will run local on the Eighth Avenue line between West 4th Street and 145th Street in Manhattan.
  • Northbound ac trains will run express between Canal Street and 145th Street in Manhattan

 

Customers will be able to use southbound/downtown d and f trains to access skipped stations.

  • Transfer between an uptown and downtown d at 59th Street-Columbus Circle in Manhattan for stations between Seventh Avenue / 53rd Street and 14th Street in Manhattan.
  • Transfer between an uptown and downtown f at Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights for stations between 14th Street and 21st Street – Queensbridge.
  • Customers can also use the 7 train to transfer between Eighth Avenue and Sixth Avenue at 42nd Street in Manhattan, or the l train to transfer between Eighth Avenue and Sixth Avenue at 14th Street in Manhattan, as well as the nearby Seventh Avenue or Eighth Avenue service in Manhattan.
  • Customers at Sixth Avenue stations can take a southbound d or f train to West 4th Street in Manhattan to access a northbound d or f train.

 

 

From Friday, May 13, at 11:45 p.m. to Monday, May 15, at 5 a.m., uptown d trains will operate local between Broadway-Lafayette and 47th-50th Streets-Rockefeller Center in Manhattan.

 

From Friday, May 20, at 11:45 p.m. to Monday, May 22, at 5 a.m., and from Friday, June 30, at 11:45 p.m. to Monday, July 3, at 5 a.m., uptown f trains will operate express between Broadway-Lafayette and 47th-50th Streets-Rockefeller Center in Manhattan.

Weeknights

Weeknight overnight reroutes will occur between April 24 and July 14. Work will also occur during two weeks from June 5 to June 16. Between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. on those nights, service will operate as follows:

  • a trains will operate express in both directions between 145th Street and Canal Street in Manhattan
  • c trains will operate express between 145th Street and Canal Street in Manhattan
  • d trains will operate local between 205th Street in The Bronx and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn, and will operate via the a and f lines between 59th Street/Columbus Circle in Manhattan and Coney Island/Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn.
  • e trains will operate normally
  • f trains will operate local between 21st Street/Queensbridge in Queens and Coney Island in Brooklyn, and will operate via the nand r in Manhattan and via the d in Brooklyn
  • m trains will operate normally
  • Free buses will run between West 4th Street and Grand Street, and between West 4th Street and East Broadway in Manhattan

For those who prefer to contact the MTA by telephone, information is available by dialing 511. Connecticut customers should call 877-690-5114. Those who are non-hearing or hard of hearing can use their preferred service provider for the free 711 relay to reach the MTA at 511.
