Montefiore Health System announced on Wednesday, Dec. 8, that Dr. Sangita Jindal, who oversees the lab at Montefiore’s Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Health in Hartsdale, NY, has been named the president-elect of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART). 

 

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), ART includes all fertility treatments in which either eggs or embryos are handled. In general, ART procedures involve surgically removing eggs from a woman’s ovaries, combining them with sperm in the laboratory, and returning them to the woman’s body or donating them to another woman. They do NOT include treatments in which only sperm are handled (i.e., intrauterine—or artificial—insemination) or procedures in which a woman takes medicine only to stimulate egg production without the intention of having eggs retrieved.

 

In appointing Jindal, Ph.D., HCLD (high-complexity clinical laboratory director), Montefiore officials said the doctor brings expertise in in vitro fertilization (IVF) and gene expression associated with ovarian aging, as well as 25 years of lab experience to the role. “The breadth and depth of her knowledge makes her an invaluable resource for SART, which partners with laboratories and IVF clinics across the country to create and maintain nationwide quality and safety standards,” hospital officials said. 

 

According to Montefiore Health System, more than 86 percent of IVF clinics are members of SART, including Montefiore in Westchester and the Bronx. Officials said SART clinics meet the highest standards for quality, safety and care to ensure the best possible reproductive environments, for both providers and the families they work with.

Jindal, who is a professor of obstetrics & gynecology and women’s health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, is active on several committees at The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and has served as national president for the Society for Reproductive Biologists and Technologists, the affiliate society within ASRM representing all scientists and laboratory technicians in reproductive biology.
