Latest Edition of the Norwood News is Out!

Dear Fellow Readers,

The eighth edition of the award-winning Norwood News is out with plenty of Bronx community news you can use. We’ve packed 16 pages full of news you can share with your family and friends, so let’s get to it.

We’re keeping education on the front lines in our coverage and bring you a story out of Junior High School 80, where a three-judge panel ruled the 95-year school should receive a $3 million grant it was approved and then denied by the state. Hear why JHS 80 is in dire need of these funds, and hear from the lawyer who notes there is a chance for the state to appeal.

Inside the cover, you’ll find an editorial focusing on Governor Andrew Cuomo as the potential sorcerer supreme in lifting the curse of the Kingsbridge Armory. The Armory, destined for some kind of reconfiguration, is expected to be an ice center. This was the year the ice center was to be built. Could this finally be the year where the Curse of the Armory is lifted?

More stories include two profile pieces from our dynamite intern reporters, Dylan Croll and Adeline Hanssen, on a Norwood man slated for CBS TV’s Amazing Race and a Bedford Park man tending to a community garden. You’ll also read stories on the $3 billion development boom the Bronx has seen, a women’s empowerment event organized by Community Board 7, and part five of our five-part Bronx Barriers series with WFUV. Read Anthony Ali’s report on money managing.

As usual, the regular Norwood News staples are on hand–Inquiring Photographer, Neighborhood Notes, and Out & About–all aimed at tickling your brain. Read up!

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students. As you navigate this website, please let us know if you discover any glitches or if you have any suggestions. We’d love to hear from you.
