Indian Village: Two Men Scammed by Fake Police Officer While Renting Apartment

The NYPD is seeking the public’s assistance identifying the person seen in the attached video who scammed two prospective renters into handing over cash for an apartment by impersonating a police officer in the Indian Village section of The Bronx.

On Thursday, April 7, at around 10 p.m., police said the individual met a 31-year-old male victim and 35-year-old male victim inside a residential building in the vicinity of Haight Avenue and Neill Avenue allegedly in order to rent them an apartment.

The victims agreed to renting the location and gave the individual $2,000 in cash. “Prior to leaving, the individual told the victims that he was a police officer and that he would email them a receipt for the transaction at a later time,” and NYPD official said. “The individual, who was not authorized to make any sales, then fled with the victims’ money.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the CrimeStoppers website at https://crimestoppers.nypdonline.org/ or on Twitter @NYPDTips.
