City Council Member Marjorie Velázquez (C.D. 13), a Democrat, announced this morning, Oct. 2, in Pelham Parkway, that she has allocated $1.39 million in capital funding to support the New York City Fire Department’s (FDNY) operational needs throughout  the district, including FDNY Engine 97 (Pelham Parkway), FDNY Engine 70/Ladder 53 (City Island), and FDNY EMS Station 20 (Pelham Parkway). Velázquez was joined by FDNY Bronx Borough Commander John Sarrocco and EMS Division 7 Commander John Eyzaguirre.

 

District 13 covers some or all of the Bronx neighborhoods of Allerton, City Island, Country Club, Edgewater Park, Ferry Point, Locust Point, Morris Park, Pelham Bay, Pelham Gardens, Pelham Parkway, Schuylerville, Silver Beach, Spencer Estates, Throggs Neck, Van Nest, Waterbury LaSalle, Westchester Square, and Zerega.

 

Officials from Velázquez’s office said as part of the councilwoman’s 2023 vision [and funding planning], she has been vocal about her support of local emergency response agencies, including the FDNY. They said this past year, she sat with local firehouses to identify their needs and discuss how her support would enable them to continue to service the community.

 

“Our emergency response partners are a crucial part of our communities and it is my mission to ensure they have the tools necessary to succeed and provide for the community. This year’s funding will enhance the quality for Bronxites in emergency situations, from the firehouse to the communities our firefighters and EMS workers serve,” said Velázquez at Monday’s press conference held at 1454 Astor Avenue in Pelham Gardens.

 

They said FDNY Engine 97, located in Pelham Gardens, will receive $1.2 million to purchase a new generator that will enable the firehouse to continue operations in severe weather. Additionally, they said neighboring firehouse, Engine 70/Ladder 53 which is based in City Island, will receive $125,000 for a new overhead door at the firehouse. Finally, they said FDNY EMS Station 20 will receive $68,3000 to install a new door that rapidly opens and closes. 

 

As reported, one person died in an Allerton fire caused by a Lithium-ion battery in March. More recently in September, also in Allerton, a woman crashed into a Dunkin Donuts. Meanwhile, also in September, three people, including two cops, were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Pelham Bay, as reported.

 

In a statement, Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, said of the funding announcement, “These vital upgrades represent a significant enhancement to our emergency response capabilities, and further secure our commitment to the citizens we proudly serve. We are grateful to Councilmember Velázquez for her generous support.”
