A coalition of community groups and local leaders are holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Mott Haven Community Refrigerator official launch on Monday, October 12, 2020 at 12 p.m. in Mott Haven at the intersection of 141st Street and Saint Ann’s Avenue in The Bronx.

The Bronx Community Foundation, State Assembly candidate, Amanda Septimo, (D/WFP-84), and leaders from The American Dream Charter School, have joined forces to establish the first community refrigerator in Mott Haven. Co-organizers Daniel Zauderer and Charlotte Alvarez, both sixth-grade teachers at the American Dream School, say the community refrigerator is a freestanding outdoor refrigerator providing all community members with 24-hour, no-questions-asked access to fresh food.

Operating with a “take what you need, give what you can” philosophy, “Mott Haven Fridge” is stocked by a grassroots network of community partners, maintained by a team of local volunteers, and provided with ongoing funding by the Bronx Community Foundation. The first community refrigerator in Mott Haven, and one of only a few in the Bronx, the co-organizers say it represents an important step in developing a more robust network of community refrigerators throughout the Bronx to combat an unprecedented level of food insecurity in the borough.

“Food insecurity has plagued the South Bronx for decades, but this suffering has been an especially painful issue highlighted throughout the course of this pandemic” said Septimo. “This group is stepping in to meet the immediate needs for high quality, free, healthy food while we work on the long-term solutions to food insecurity, and we are doing so hand-in-hand with community. I couldn’t be more thrilled to see this effort come together.”

“Mott Haven Fridge wouldn’t exist today if it weren’t for the excitement and support of the local community, and we can’t wait to officially thank everyone who has been involved in turning our vision into a reality,” wrote Zauderer and Alvarez in a press release. “We hope that this new beacon of light in Mott Haven will not only provide community members with all-hours access to healthy food, but will also contribute to the wider public discussion around food insecurity in New York’s forgotten borough,” they added.

Meanwhile, Desmon Lewis is co-founder of The Bronx Community Foundation and said, “Nearly one in four Bronxites are considered food insecure, a severe situation that has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Lewis continued, “A critical goal of our foundation is to bring people and resources together, like never before, to foster and implement innovative ideas with the ultimate goal of eliminating the systemic and institutional challenges we face as a borough.” He added, “We hope the Mott Haven Community Refrigerator will help to continue the spark of the community fridge movement in The Bronx and be another step towards eradicating food insecurity.”

The short ribbon-cutting ceremony will include speeches from the project organizers, local community partners, and an opportunity for community members to learn more about how they can get involved with the effort. Local Bronx artist, Rocio Marie, who recently painted the fridge, will also be in attendance. Those who are able, are invited to bring one item to donate to the fridge as a “welcome gift” to this new community staple.
