Bronx Notes: Interactive Movie Night at Bronx Documentary Center

“FELA KUTI: MUSIC IS THE WEAPON,” the definitive film on Fela, the Black President, the creator of Afro-beat. Shot in Lagos at the peak of his career in 1982, this documentary contains interviews with Fela detailing his thoughts on politics, Pan-Africanism, music and religion, alongside unpublished versions of songs like ITT, Army Arrangement and Power Show. In this screening proper cinema watching, singing, dancing and other forms of engagement are expected from the audience while simultaneously viewing the film. This experience aims to generate an immediate response and encourage dialogue and interaction around the themes that are raised in the film.

This Friday, Oct. 12, the Bronx Museum is celebrating its 40th anniversary and the public is invited to celebrate with them. The event will feature a screening of video art provided by Manuel de Santaren’s collection. Other activities will include a silent art auction and film screenings, including the documentary “From Mambo to Hip Hop.”

Kingsbridge Armory Forum Offers Chance for Developers to Make Their Case to Community

During a forum tonight at Monroe College (6:30 p.m., 2501 Jerome Ave.), the two competing developers looking to revamp the Bronx’s long-vacant Kingsbridge Armory will have a chance to talk face-to-face with the community. It might be their last opportunity to sway locals into their corner before the city’s Economic Development Corporation, which is controlled by the mayor, makes a decision on which group gets the bid.

A Dinnertime Police Raid at Norwood Restaurant Turns Up Little

Fresh off an overnight stay in jail, the relatively new owner of Sal’s Pizza and Restaurant in Norwood said his very public arrest during dinnertime last week was based on erroneous information given to police and that he was the victim of a robbery setup. But police say they executed a valid search warrant and came away with enough evidence to charge the owner with a couple of misdemeanors and a violation.

The Monroe College King Graduate School for Urban Studies and Applied Research presents “Crimes And The Numbers Game.” Eli Silverman, a emeritus professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the graduate center of CUNY, will be discussing the future of police relations and the community. The general public is welcomed to come and learn, participate in the discussion and debate. This discussion will take place Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m., at Monroe College King Hall, Gym 2501 Jerome Ave.

Bronx Notes: African and Muslim Community Enrichment Day

Bronx Council Member Helen Diane Foster and the 16th District African and Muslim Council host the 3rd annual Community Enrichment Day this Thursday, Oct. 11, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This event will take place at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Lower Gallery, located at 1040 Grand Concourse (at 165th Street). The purpose of the event is to depict and focus on the advancements and growth of the African and Muslim community occurring in the Bronx, and their contributions to the community. New York City Council Citations of Merits will be awarded to “Rising Stars” and “Longevity in Leadership.”
