Bronx Notes: Community Project Grants (Deadline Jan. 31)

The Bronx Library Center at 310 E. Kingsbridge Rd., room C22, will hold a grant information session on Jan. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information or for required RSVP, call (212) 822-9568. Citizens Community for New York City is awarding $500 to $3,000 in grants to resident-led groups to work on community and school improvement projects from East Tremont in the Bronx to West Brighton on Staten Island. Apply online and create significant change in your town by supporting nutrition awareness programs, building a community garden, or even focusing on youth education and physical fitness. Application deadline is Jan. 31.

Bronx Notes: Join Your Community Board

Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. invites Bronx residents to make a difference in their community by joining their local community board. Diaz’s office will be accepting applications for all 12 community boards from city residents who reside, work or have professional or other significant interest in the Bronx. Applications are available at Diaz’s Community Board Office or your local Community Board office (CB7, 229A E. 204th St.). Applications are also available online at bronxboropres.nyc.gov. Editorial: What ‘Seis’ Says About The Bronx

When a mustachioed and smiling man with a large camera dangling around his neck tucked a beer into his jacket pocket and emerged from the gaggle of people surrounding the Bronx Documentary Center, I knew we had arrived at the most happening corner in the Boogie Down on an early Saturday night. The gaggle and the dozens slowly moving around inside the Documentary Center, at the corner of 151st Street and Courtlandt Avenue, were there for the opening night of the new photography exhibit, “Seis Del Sur” (Six From the South [Bronx]), which is garnering loads of positive attention for the artists and the center.

DOE Plans to House Two Small Schools Inside Clinton H.S.

The tremendous outpouring of support by the students, staff and alumni of DeWitt Clinton High School appears to have paid off after the Department of Education said it would not close the struggling school. A week later, however, the DOE said it would be lowering Clinton’s enrollment and co-locating two new smaller schools within Clinton’s building.

Bronx Community Board Sets Stage For Armory Talks

Community Board 7 voted unanimously last week to approve a draft of a community benefits package that will be used to negotiate an agreement with the development group that wins the bid to redevelop the Kingsbridge Armory. After drafting the package, the board will hand over negotiations the Kingsbridge Armory Redevelopment Alliance, a group pushing for responsible development of the iconic Bronx landmark.
