Hospitals across the planet jointly celebrated World Kidney Day, and Montefiore Medical Center joined in on the action. In recognition of the event, on March 10 Montefiore set up a table in the lobby of its Moses Campus with pamphlets, handouts, and giveaways that piqued interest on organ donation. Those who wished to sign up to join the kidney donor registry were also welcomed. On the eve of the first day of Spring, hundreds of residents gathered at Norwood’s Williamsbridge Oval Park for the annual Spring Egg Hunt. The event, sponsored by the New York City Department of Parks, Jerome-Gun Hill Business Improvement District, BID merchants including Gun Hill Pharmacy, New York Cares, Montefiore Health System, and Friends of Williamsbridge Oval Park ushered the start of Spring and brought some fierce competition during several egg hunts. At a low-income residence for the elderly in Kingsbridge, a resident opened their window one recent grey morning and plunged to their death, spattering on the pavement. The suicide, happening at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Webb Avenue Residence directly across from the James J. Peters Veterans Administration Hospital, startled plenty of onlookers even as a security guard draped a white blanket over the body. Shades of blue have been spotted at one of the borough’s largest commercial stretches. They come in the form of posters hung at more than two-dozen businesses across the Fordham Road Business Improvement District reminding men and women over the age of 50 to get screened for colorectal cancer, an illness common in that age bracket.
