Probe Underway in Death of Homeless Baby in Riverdale

The head of the city’s homeless services agency has launched a full investigation into the death of a newborn baby inside a pop-up shelter in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. Steven Banks, commissioner for the New York City Social Services Department, appearing at a forum with the CUNY Journalism School’s Center for Community and Ethnic Media, said the probe into the four-month-old’s death, is underway. Within the next few months, what was previously PS 51 will be reborn as a school for autistic students living in New York City. PS 51, located at 3200 Jerome Ave. by Van Cortlandt Avenue, was shut down in August of 2011 after high levels of toxins were discovered. The renovated building, cleared for occupancy by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, will house the special needs school run by Quality Services for the Autistic Community (QSAC). Friends of Mosholu Parkland, the civic group boasting and promoting the verdant dale of Mosholu Parkland, held its first annual Fall Festival (not to be confused with Jerome-Gun HIll Business Improvement District’s event of the same name). The group headed to Kossuth Playground on Mosholu Parkway North, for the daytime soiree. Furry Bandits Raid Norwood Store

For the second time in as many weeks a pair of bandits has broken into a local GNC store and police and passersby were baffled to learn that the intruders were of the 4-legged kind. Police were called to the vitamin supplement shop at 3453 Jerome Ave. along the Jerome-Gun Hill Business Improvement District at 9 a.m. on Sept. 29, for an “animal incident,” involving raccoons. A dispatcher quickly reported it had “one in custody.” The four officers met the employee, who watched as the pair of furry creatures scurried about the store’s counter-tops and shelves in a search for food.
