Editorial: USPS and Bronx DA Need to Squash Mailbox Fishers

NORWOOD RESIDENTS ARE confidently using this mailbox at the corner of East 207th Street and Perry Avenue after its swing flap was replaced with a slit cover to fend off so-called “fishing.” The scheme involved thieves feeding a lassoed bottle affixed with glue traps into the mailbox to fish out mail containing checks or gift cards. So far, this is one of three mailboxes with the new slit cover, with the second one found at the corner of East 207th Street and Decatur Avenue, and the third at the southeast corner of Jerome Avenue near Gun Hill Road. Neighborhood Notes: Free Immigration Service

More than a dozen convicted sex offenders, with convictions that include the rape of a 10-year-old child, have moved within the confines of the 52nd Precinct. Officers at the precinct, which covers the neighborhoods of Norwood, Bedford Park, Kingsbridge Heights, Fordham, and University Heights, were made aware of the move by probationary officers. Officers have since stopped by community meetings to alert residents. Sex offenders are required to register their name on a database following their conviction and release. The 52nd Precinct needs help finding a burglary suspect who brazenly sneaks into fire escapes and makes off with victims’ belongings. Police say the thief was reported to have struck six times from Oct. 6 through Nov. 24. In each crime, the thief enters the apartment through the fire escape, in some cases with the victims sleeping inside, and steals items. The thief snuck into apartments on Valentine Avenue and Grand Concourse between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. In all, the thief made off with purses, credit cards, sneakers, watches, Apple products, a Beats headphones set, video

The start of the holiday weekend was interrupted when the doors of the Williamsbridge Oval Park Recreation Center were vandalized during evening hours of operation. The front doors of the Williamsbridge Oval Park Recreation Center were shattered when rocks and cinderblocks were thrown at the door, by what many believe to be adolescent thugs, leaving the entryways partially destroyed. The incident happened around 6 p.m. on Dec. 24. Continuing a tradition established for at least five years, the Norwood News took a look back at its 25 editions it puts out every year to highlight stories that consistently stood in the main pages of the paper. Editorial: Evaluating Norwood News’ Predictions of 2016

The Norwood News took a look back at 2016’s first editorial, “Welcoming 2016 With Predictions on New Round of Stories,” which forecasted stories for the next 12 months. With that, we look back on these predictions and what really happened: Securing the Oval: 2015 saw more and more police making arrests at Williamsbridge Oval Park, a park frequented by hundreds daily. Fires tormented police for months, but have since subsided. That’s a good thing. Safeguarding the park, a key source of entertainment for a largely working class community, is critical. If a populace fears a park, it will only signal
