BMCA Receives $10K Grant, Post-Dated 2020

The Bedford Mosholu Community Association (BMCA) received quite the financial bump from their local Assemblywoman. Assemblywoman Nathalia Fernandez, whose 80th Assembly District partially covers Bedford Park, gave BMCA a $10,000 allocation. The group was one of three organizations–Pelham Parkway Neighborhood Association and the Allerton Homeowners Association–falling within Fernandez’s district to receive a separate grant in the same amount. “These organizations have brought service and attention to our neighborhood for collectively over 40 years,” said Fernandez. “They have given us different programs and events such as neighborhood beautification, civic engagement, and programs for our seniors,” added Fernandez. Like room temperature, economists like myself look at the economy to see if it is under- or over-heating, quarterly and annually. Most economists use many tools for their analysis. Underneath are some from the Bureau of Economic Statistics (BES). The GDP “growth rate” shows how much more the economy produced than in the previous quarter. The ideal rate is between 2 and 3%. In a healthy economy, unemployment and inflation are in balance. In 2017 current GDP increased 4.7 percent. It follows a 4.2 percent expansion in the previous period which was the highest since the third quarter of 2014.

For candidates in the impending 11th Council District race, Eric Dinowitz still leads when it comes to fundraising, building an $80,990 war chest compared to main rival Dan Padernacht, who raised $28,026, according to the latest campaign finance figures. Dinowitz, a school teacher, district leader, and the son of Assembly Jeffrey Dinowitz, also has 50 percent of his donors coming directly from the 11th Council District, which covers Norwood, parts of Bedford Park, Kingsbridge, Riverdale, Fieldston, and Woodlawn. Bus Redesign Plan Could Axe Norwood Routes, Worrying Residents

The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) and its proposed Bronx Bus Network redesign plan could affect several Norwood bus lines, a move unseen in decades, and which could affect thousands of riders. The MTA’s draft plan to improve Bronx bus service released last month shows the Bx28 and the express BxM4, which run through Norwood, are expected to be rerouted, while the Bx38 would be eliminated altogether. In addition, the Bx30 will no longer travel to Norwood. Under the plan, the Bx28 won’t run through Mosholu Parkway and Paul Avenue respectively, which would make the Bx10 the only alternative for riders

Monroe College in Fordham has been reportedly hacked, with hackers demanding $2 million worth of Bitcoin to undo the now encrypted files. The breach, first reported by the New York Daily News, is now being investigated by the NYPD. Monroe College, founded in 1933, has campuses in Fordham, Manhattan, and New Rochelle in Westchester County. The website is currently down.
