Despite a surge in knife slashings across the city, Norwood businesses are shrugging it off, having pointed to their own internal protocols should someone seek to buy a blade. An out-of-control vehicle slammed against a light pole at a Norwood commercial strip, spooking bystanders and leaving the 81-year-old driver in critical condition. Police believed the driver might have suffered some type of medical emergency, causing the accident. Police and paramedics were called to the heavily congested intersection of Bainbridge Avenue and East 205th Street on Feb. 25 after the out-of-control vehicle jumped the curb at the northeast corner and slammed into the corner pole. Kirsis Lopez from the JSP Life Agency on East 204th Street was on the second floor having breakfast, when she heard, “a large crunching sound.”

The corner of Webb Avenue and Kingsbridge Road was cordoned off for several hours yesterday after a resident of a Kingsbridge assisted-living facility threw themselves out the window at the height of the commuting hour. Witnesses heard the thud of the victim falling from a window at the Weinberg Gardens just as commuters from the James J. Peters Veterans Hospital drove or walked into work. SEVERAL DOZEN BRONX park activists came out in support of their beloved green spaces at the 22nd annual Bronx Parks Speak Up held at Lehman College Feb. 20. The event drew volunteer groups representing parks from Norwood and Bedford Park, including Friends of Mosholu Parkway and Friends of the Williamsbridge Oval. The event was sponsored by the Bronx Coalition of Parks and Green Spaces, a grassroots organization that holds the yearly networking conference.

A pair of Bronx legislators are once again backing state Sen. Adriano Espaillat for the 13th Congressional District, which covers Norwood. But an endorsement from the Bronx Democratic County Committee appears unlikely. Espaillat, a Democrat, grabbed support from his Democratic colleague, Senator Gustavo Rivera, along with state Assemblyman Victor Pichardo, a Democrat. Fifth graders at a local school are gaining some real life skills, helping younger students while making money. Every school day for about one hour, a handful of students from the fifth grade class at P.S. 94 on King’s College Place tutor kindergarteners in different subjects such as math and reading.
