Good morning, beautiful readers. Welcome back to Breaking Bronx on the Norwood News. Here’s a look at the Bronx news stories we’re following today. Weather: Decent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms today and muggy, high around 77.
When you get a chance, please take some time to explore the issues affecting community efforts to gain access to the Harlem River waterfront around Mott Haven. It’s a joint investigative project by the Mott Haven Herald and City University’s Graduate School of Journalism. That means an army of young journalists looks at virtually issue from every angle. Compelling stuff. We’ll have more on the individual stories contained in the project over the next several days.
Speaking of the Harlem River waterfront, a couple of developments on the FreshDirect front are contained in this story by the Daily News‘ Dan Beekman. 1) Congressman Jose Serrano and his son, State Senator Jose M. Serrano, sent a letter to the state, which owns the waterfront land where FreshDirect plans to build its new home base (for which $130 million in subsidies and tax breaks were approved), asking the government to halt any development on the property until its usage is audited. The Serranos say they’re concerned about the increased truck traffic in an area where residents suffer from high rates of asthma. 2) That news somewhat buries the news that FreshDirect recently announced that it will be serving every zip code in the Bronx and begin a pilot program to accept food stamps and EBT cards. (The online grocer previously only delivered to Riverdale and Kingsbridge Heights.)
