On Friday morning, Oct. 22, students, faculty, and staff of Bronx Community College will collaborate in a community service event dedicated to cleaning up what they describe as one of the most beautiful campuses in The City University of New York college network.

Volunteers should gather under the Meister overhang at 8:30 a.m. to check-in and receive a team assignment to a designated area on and around the campus perimeter. Teams will set out by 9 a.m. to tackle litter and improve the campus grounds. According to the organizers, all volunteers must be in compliance with the CUNY/BCC vaccination requirement or Cleared4 testing protocol to gain access to campus, and all visitors must follow the CUNY visitor’s policy, which can be read here.

Dressing for the weather, with gloves and properly rugged footwear, is strongly recommended. Supplies, including gloves, bags, grabbers and rakes, will be available.

BCC president, Thomas A. Isekenegbe, had some words of encouragement for volunteers ahead of the event, saying, “Your participation and civic engagement in this effort demonstrates outstanding school spirit, and a commitment to our environment as well.”

Lunch will be provided to all volunteers after the clean-up effort. To volunteer, register here.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
