The United Probation Officers Association announced their support on Sunday, June 13, for District 16 City Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson in her bid to win the Bronx borough presidency.

Dalvanie K Powell is president of the association and said The Bronx needs elected officials who understand the role that probation officers play in turning lives around in New York City and that Gibson “certainly” does that. “She has proven herself, time and again, that she is committed to the future of the Bronx and to New York City, and we proudly endorse her for borough president of the Bronx. We look forward to working with her in the future in her new role,” said Powell.

Gibson said she was proud to receive the endorsement of the association, saying probation officers work hard everyday to help young adults turn their lives around, and allow them follow a pathway to college, careers and success. “Your circumstances and mistakes should not determine your future, and with successful programs such as South Bronx NeON, youth are able to access a wealth of programs and services,” she said.

“As borough president, I will continue to fight alongside them for the fair wages that they deserve for the work they do,” she added, before thanking Powell and the entire membership for their endorsement and saying she looked forward to continuing to work together with them.

Other candidates in the race for the Bronx borough presidency include District 14 City Councilman Fernando Cabrera, Assembly Member Nathalia Fernández, former NYPD Detective Sammy Ravelo, and State Sen. Luis Sepúlveda.
