Oswald Feliz, tenant lawyer and one of around eight candidates running in the 15th District Council race to replace the incumbent councilman and Congressman-elect Ritchie Torres, announced on Tuesday, Dec. 22, that he has been endorsed by Bronx Assemblyman Victor Pichardo, who represents around 30 to 35 percent of the district that Feliz seeks to represent.

“As a tenant lawyer, Oswald defended our most vulnerable residents at risk of eviction,” said Pichardo in a statement. “I know he will continue to champion the issues that matter most to Bronx residents: public education, affordable housing, and recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. I’m proud to stand with him as he has stood with us; and encourage all to join me in supporting his campaign for City Council,” he added.

Reacting to the news, Feliz said, “Assemblyman Victor Pichardo has been a tireless fighter for working and vulnerable families in the Bronx. My campaign is honored to receive his endorsement, and look forward to working with him to build a better Bronx – one that works for all of us.”

Feliz, previously profiled by the Norwood News, remains a member, but recently stepped down as president, of the Northwest Bronx Democrats for Change. He said this was in order to devote more time to his campaign for City Council, and afford someone else the opportunity to lead. That person is Rachel Bradshaw.

Feliz told the Norwood News that he has known Pichardo for around eight to ten years. “We worked together at Senator Gustavo Rivera’s office, before he was elected to the New York State Assembly,” he said.

Other candidates in the race to fill now Congressman Ritchie Torres’ vacant seat include Kenny Agosto, district director to New York State Senator Jamaal T. Bailey, Ischia Bravo, Bronx Community Board 7 District Manager, Elisa Crespo, education liaison at the Bronx borough president’s office, Bernadette Ferrara, president of the Van Nest Neighborhood Alliance, Latchmi Gopal, a community organizer and former staffer for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, Jose Padilla, former Independence candidate for both the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate, Arial Rivera-Diaz, a former finance clerk with the City’s Board of Elections and former official at the Republican National Hispanic Assembly, Bronx Community Board 6 District Manager, John Sanchez and Altagracia Soldevilla, another community organizer.

Julian Sepulveda, an official at the Department of Education, suspended his campaign in November and endorsed Crespo, and Lilithe L Lozano and Troy Blackwell did not make the ballot.

As point of clarification, There seems to be an error in the caption. Feliz isn’t the state committeeman, he lost his state committee race.
