Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson announced her Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 capital budget priorities on Monday, July 20, committing more than $56 million across 193 capital projects to bridge the digital divide in schools, expand affordable housing opportunities, enhance public safety, modernize community spaces, and support critical institutions throughout The Bronx.

“During my first term as borough president, we made historic investments in our schools, parks, health care facilities, community organizations, and neighborhood infrastructure,” said Gibson. “As we begin this new chapter in my second term, this capital budget builds on that foundation by continuing to make strategic investments that expand opportunities for our youth and families, strengthen public safety in our communities, and improve the quality of life for every Bronx resident.”

Gibson said the FY27 Capital Budget builds on what was described as the historic investments made during the borough president’s first four years in office, while continuing to prioritize critical investments in the borough’s future.

She said the FY27 Capital Budget includes more than $35.2 million for schools and educational institutions across the Bronx. With the FY27 allocations, Gibson said her office has now committed more than $100 million in capital funding for education during her tenure, supporting what were described as critical improvements that enhance learning environments and expand opportunities for Bronx students.

Her office said this includes $150,000 for the creation of a Hair Salon & Barber Shop at the Bronx School for Continuous Learners, located at 3177 Webster Avenue in Norwood, $1 million for athletic field renovations at the Christopher Columbus Educational Campus, located at 925 Astor Avenue in Allerton, and $350,000 to the Bronx School of Hip Hop, located at 1600 Webster Avenue in Claremont, for mobile media carts equipped with cameras, microscopes, laptops, tablets, and editing tools as the school prepares to welcome its inaugural class this fall.

In addition to education, Gibson’s office said the FY27 Capital Budget allocations include funding to strengthen public safety, cultural institutions, and neighborhood resources. They said Gibson allocated $500,000 to renovate FDNY Engine 79, Ladder 37, Battalion 27, located in Bedford Park, following the devastating fire that severely damaged the firehouse earlier this year, and “ensuring firefighters have the facilities they need to continue protecting Bronx residents.”

Gibson also allocated $500,000 to renovate the Bronx Museum’s South Wing Atrium, located in the Concourse section at 1040 Grand Concourse, supporting what was described as “one of the borough’s premier cultural institutions,” and $500,000 to renovate the Soundview Library Branch in Soundview, to modernize the facility and improve access to educational resources, technology, and community programming.

The borough president also allocated $250,000 to the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation for equipment supporting its Virtual Reality Anti-Hate Initiative, in recognition, she said, of the importance of confronting hate through education. The program, described as innovative, uses immersive technology to educate young people about the dangers of antisemitism, prejudice, and discrimination while fostering understanding, empathy, and inclusion.

Additionally, the borough president’s office said the FY27 Capital Budget includes $4.5 million for housing, more than $3.5 million for health, more than $3.7 million for higher education, more than $3.5 million for cultural institutions, and $2.4 million for community centers. They said these investments, alongside funding for parks, libraries, and public safety infrastructure, reflect Gibson’s holistic approach to strengthening neighborhoods, expanding opportunity, and improving quality of life throughout The Bronx.

Officials from Gibson’s office said the FY27 Capital Budget advances the borough president’s mission to make community-driven investments that respond to The Bronx’s evolving needs and create long-term opportunities for residents. Through partnerships with schools, health care providers, cultural organizations, nonprofit institutions, and City agencies, they said these capital investments will strengthen neighborhoods, expand opportunity, and ensure The Bronx remains a borough where families can live, learn, work, and thrive for generations.

Gibson recently issued a statement following the Jay-Z anniversary concert weekend at Yankee Stadium and the summer tourism boost across The Bronx linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament and more.

“Over the past several weeks, the Bronx has proudly welcomed thousands of visitors through a series of exciting events and activations showcasing the very best of our borough,” she said. “From FIFA watch parties and the Jay-Z Anniversary Concert weekend at Yankee Stadium to the reopening of the newly renovated pavilion at Orchard Beach and our annual Savor the Bronx Restaurant Week, these events have brought new energy to our neighborhoods while generating meaningful economic revenue for our local businesses and commercial corridors.”

Gibson said the events exemplified what was possible when there was investment in The Bronx as a premier destination for culture, entertainment, recreation, and tourism. “Anyone who dines at a neighborhood restaurant, shops at a local business, or explores one of our world-class attractions helps strengthen our local economy and supports the hardworking entrepreneurs who keep our communities thriving year-round,” she said.

The borough president added, “As summer continues, I encourage everyone to keep that momentum going by supporting our local businesses, dining at our neighborhood restaurants, shopping along our commercial corridors, and exploring all that our borough has to offer. We are also excited to continue welcoming residents and visitors to our annual Summer Concert Series at Orchard Beach, which will run through Labor Day weekend and offer even more opportunities to enjoy live entertainment while supporting our local economy.”
