Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY-16) will join a teach-in on March 15 for all New York residents on how the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill passed last week will translate to emergency relief for tenants, homeless individuals, and students and families across New York.

Bowman’s representatives said that over the weekend, the New York State Assembly and Senate released their one-house budget proposals, which included some reversal of tax breaks for the rich to raise $7 billion in progressive tax revenue. They said the “Invest in Our New York” campaign — a coalition of over 170 organizations and dozens of legislators — has called on Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to claim the full extent of progressive  revenue possible by ending all tax breaks for New York’s wealthiest residents.

Additionally, Bowman will speak to the heightened urgency for New York State to pass the Invest in Our New York Act, a package of six bills that will raise $50 billion in revenue by ending tax breaks for the rich. According to Bowman’s office, unlike the federal stimulus package, the latter act “will create sustained revenue streams to undo the systemic housing and education injustice in New York created by a decade of cuts to schools, affordable housing, localities, and more.”

The teach-in will be co-hosted by Jasmine Gripper and Tom Sheppard of the Alliance for Quality Education and Cea Weaver, Housing Justice for All, two key groups which Bowman’s office said are involved in the coalition fighting for the “Invest in Our New York Act.”

The event will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. EST.
