Bedford Park: Police Unable to Provide Details of “Warrant” Arrest

A pair of police officers from the 52nd Precinct made a 100-yard dash in record time in the Bedford Park neighborhood on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2023, eventually taking a young suspect into custody. However, the NYPD said the department was unable to provide any details of the arrest, when asked.

It’s not yet known why or where the foot chase began, but the male and female officer were in full-sprint mode as they chased the young suspect northbound along Jerome Avenue from East 198th Street in Bedford Park at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

The two caught up with the young sprinter at Minerva Place and Jerome Avenue and apparently tackled him there. As Norwood News arrived on the scene, the two officers were seen pinning the young man to the ground as other patrol cars began to arrive.

After placing the young man in handcuffs, a third officer arrived and lifted him up, and with others, walked him to a waiting patrol car. The young man was not going quietly. He pulled, pushed and twisted and seemed to even try to kick and trip the officers, but was eventually placed inside the car.

An unidentified older man used his cellphone to record a video of the arrest. When the man asked police, “What he did?,” an officer replied, “There’s a bench warrant for him.” As the man continued to film the officers as they placed the young man into the patrol car, one officer warned the man he was getting too close.

After several requests placed with the NYPD’s press office, a police spokesperson responded to Norwood News, saying, “There is nothing on file with the information provided.”

After following up with at least two more requests, and providing photo evidence of the actual arrest, the unnamed police spokesperson later said, “If an individual is apprehended on an open warrant, they are returned to court. There are no arrests on file with the information provided.”

A request for information on the arrest was also made with the Bronx District Attorney’s office who told Norwood News that they would need the name of the individual arrested in order to provide any details, and added that the warrant may not have even been in Bronx County.

Multiple requests for information were also sent to Lucian Chalfen from the administrative office of the New York State Unified Court System. We did not receive an immediate response.

We also reached out to the 52nd Precinct Community Affairs team for information on the arrest. We did not receive an immediate response.
