Annual Halloween “Trunk or Treat” Celebration Held at the 52nd Precinct

An estimated crowd of over 1,000 trick-or-treaters and their parents joined local police officers and members of the NYPD’s Explorers Program as the 52nd Precinct hosted their Annual “Trunk or Treat” Halloween event in Norwood on Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Coordinated and organized by the 52nd Precinct’s Community Affairs unit, officers, staff and volunteers erected spooky scenes in front of the stationhouse on Webster Avenue.

These included a fake cemetery, scary-looking balloons and blow-up ghouls, a pumpkin patch, along with several officers dressed as goblins, a dinosaur, and a pair of superheroes.

Jerry Landron, vice president of the 52nd Precinct Community Council, told Norwood News that candy and other goodies distributed to attendees was provided by Democratic City Councilman Oswald Feliz (C.D. 15), Democratic Assemblyman George Alvarez (A.D. 78), Target and other local businesses and individual donors.

NYPD Community Affairs Officer Jessalyn Capo said State Sen. Gustavo Rivera (S.D. 33) was also one of the sponsors of the event.

According to a flier for the event, which Alvarez said has taken place annually for nearly two decades, it was also sponsored by Food Fair, and McDonalds.

Hundreds of kids and their parents were seen waiting patiently in line throughout the evening to join the event.

With the permission of their accompanying adults, Norwood News spoke to possibly four of the most exuberant youngsters who simply could not contain their excitement as they happily climbed up on the guard rail and sang songs while waiting in line to join in the fun on the day.

When Annais, 8, and Aaliyah, 9, were asked what they liked most about the 52nd Precinct’s Annual Trunk or Treat event, without hesitation, they said the photos. Asked what they liked most about Halloween, they shouted out, “Candy!!”

We also asked them about the fun of wearing costumes and if they liked dressing up. Speaking over each other and finishing each other’s sentences, one or both said, “I like the costumes! We get to dress up! I like accessories… like I get to dress up like I am right now, and I love candy!!”

Asked if they liked wearing make-up, and if they were only allowed wear make-up for Halloween, one or both said, “Only for Halloween!! It’s the only day we can wear lip gloss,” before adding, “and eye shadow!”

One of the two girls told us she was dressed as Barbie. Asked if she saw the movie of the same name, she said, “Yes,” before adding, “We saw a lot of ‘Ariels’ on our way here!”

As the line advanced forward, we also spoke to “best friends from school,” Elyze, 7, and Savannah, 7. One of the two youngsters told us she was dressed as a leopard and they later showed us their best scary claw poses.

“We’re actually in the same class!” one said, as the other added, “Yeah, we’re best friends since the first day of school!”

When we asked Elyze what was the best thing about her ‘bestie,’ Savannah, she said, “She’s pretty, and she’s amazing, and I love her!”

We then asked Savannah the same thing about Elyze. She thought about it for a second before replying, “She really knows…..like when I have a breakdown, she really knows how to really handle it!”

As they reached the top of the line and were about to enter the precinct, we asked if they played some fun games together too.
