For nearly 40 years, Norwood News has done something essential for our local democracy: ensuring that the people, challenges, victories, and everyday life of the Northwest Bronx are seen and remembered. This loss is personal for me. Norwood News was the first newspaper to write about my first-time candidacy for the New York City Council, helping reintroduce me to the community that raised me, and that I was seeking to represent.

 

Since then, its reporters have covered our neighbors coming together, explained complicated legislation, and consistently elevated stories from our communities before they were picked up by citywide and sometimes national media.

Norwood News now joins the sad national trend of local news outlets shuttering. Local journalism ensures our communities are seen, our institutions are held accountable, and our history is recorded. Without Norwood News, the stories, struggles, relevance, resilience, and victories of the Northwest Bronx will shine just a little less brightly.

 

I am saddened to see it go and profoundly grateful to every reporter, editor, photographer, and staff member who helped tell the story of our our people over the last 40 years.”
