Police said a 35-year-old male victim of a stabbing from the Wakefield section of The Bronx has died and they have arrested a 21-year-old man from Yonkers in connection with the incident, which, as reported, took place in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx on Monday afternoon, July 20.

 

As reported, the incident took place close to the location of a wellness center, Bereshit Lifestyle Center, where a 27-year-old woman fell unconscious the day prior on Sunday, July 19, and later died.

The Wellness Center, located at 3190 Riverdale Avenue, was seen cordoned off by police on July 20.

 

The NYPD said at the time that the 35-year-old male victim was stabbed in the chest during a dispute at 5 p.m. and was transferred to St. Barnabas Hospital in Belmont by EMS in critical condition.

According to a subsequent news report on the stabbing, in Spanish, by Johandry Jimenez, who obtained a live video of the assault, thanks to the quick intervention of two Dominican press workers, the victim was reportedly able to receive immediate care prior to the arrival of an ambulance and his subsequent transfer to the hospital.

 

Jimenez also reported that the motive for the stabbing appeared to have stemmed from a verbal dispute between three occupants of a car and a pedestrian which quickly escalated into a physical fight.

Jimenez went on to report that media coverage by the impacted press workers was forced to pause when faced with the severity of the injuries and the urgency of the moment, and that the two cameramen set down their equipment in order assist the victim. “In an act that prioritized humanity over news, the two cameramen interrupted their work to help the young man who was seriously injured,” she reported, adding that the incident happened while both were broadcasting live for their respective media outlets.

 

She added that she believed one press worker was from News12. Norwood News has reached out to News12 to ask if any of the press workers who allegedly responded to the incident prior to the arrival of the ambulance was from News12 and will share any updates we receive.

On Monday, Aug. 3, police provided an updated written report of the incident, saying that at around 5 p.m. on Monday, July 20, police responded to a 911 call regarding a man who had been stabbed in front of 3190 Riverdale Avenue (the address for the wellness center).

 

“Upon arrival, officers observed a 34-year-old male who sustained a stab wound to the chest,” a spokesperson said. The 34-year-old male was transported by responding officers to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition.”

Police went on to say that on July 22, the victim succumbed to his injuries and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner deemed the incident a homicide. They said there were no initial arrests, and the investigation remained ongoing. They added that the deceased was later identified as Tyrell Scott from the Wakefield section of The Bronx.

 

Pursuant to an ongoing investigation, police said Javid Edwin, 21, of Yonkers was arrested on Monday, August 3, at 8.19 a.m. in the confines of the 50th Precinct, where the incident occurred. They said he was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a firearm. He is presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.

Police had told Norwood News on or around July 20 that the mobilization point (for police) for the stabbing was at the address of the wellness center at 3190 Riverdale Avenue but that the stabbing had taken place in the vicinity of the wellness center.

 

Norwood News had also asked the NYPD on July 20 if they could say if the arrest of the man at the wellness center on Sunday, July 19, and the subsequent stabbing on Monday were related. They said at the time that it was unknown and that the investigation was ongoing. As above, we were advised the stabbing took place in the vicinity of the Wellness Center.

 

Where blood stains from the stabbing were seen on Riverdale Avenue between Tibbett Delta  and Ewen Park, a short distance away from the intersection with Irvin Avenue, Norwood News estimates is around a block in distance from the center. However, the center, itself, was also seen cordoned off behind police lines as part of the investigation into the stabbing on Monday evening, whereas it had not been earlier that day.

 

Norwood News has contacted the Bronx District Attorney’s office for more details about the arrest and charges and will share any additional information we receive.

 

As reported, in relation to the wellness center death, the NYPD had said that they arrested 55-year-old Luis Rojas Cabrera of New Jersey on Sunday, July 19, and that he has been charged with reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of profession after a 27-year-old woman was found unconscious at the center on July 19, and later died.

 

According to one police source, the woman was a customer / patient of Bereshit Wellness Center, located at 3190 Riverdale Avenue, where she was found unconscious. The website for the center is www.drluisrojas.com.

Rojas Cabrera is also presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
