Police said a man slashed in the Fordham Manor section of The Bronx during an early morning robbery is in stable condition. They added that the victim was being uncooperative with investigators.
The news comes amid Gun Violence Awareness Month and as citywide crime statistics for May were recently released. While Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that overall citywide major crime is down, and the new Patrol Borough Bronx South command similarly saw a decrease in year-to-date index crimes in May, conversely, much of the Northwest Bronx saw a rise in year-to-date crime in several major categories.
In relation to the referenced slashing in Fordham Manor, according to spokespeople from both the NYPD and EMS/FDNY, the 34-year-old man was slashed at 4.57 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, at the intersection of Briggs Avenue and East Kingsbridge Road. They said the victim suffered a gash to the head causing a laceration and was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital in Belmont.

A police official told Norwood News, “Victim was uncooperative” and said no description of the assailant was available.
As reported, a 32-year-old man was shot at close range on East 198th Street between Briggs Avenue and Bainbridge Avenue in nearby Bedford Park on Friday, May 15 and on Thursday, May 21, they said they had made one arrest in the case.
More recently, in the early hours of Saturday, June 13, as reported, a 31-year-old man was hospitalized following another stabbing on East 207th Street in the Norwood section of The Bronx after a dispute.
The latest crime statistics as of May 31, for the 52nd Precinct, where the above-referenced incidents took place, along with those for the 46th and 50th Precincts are attached. Year-to-date crime was up in all three referenced precincts in many major crime categories including murder, rape, robbery and felony assault, compared to the same timeframe last year.

As reported, in May, the division of the borough into two distinct north and south patrol commands was implemented, having been first announced in February. Patrol Borough Bronx North, headquartered at the 48th Precinct in Belmont, comprises NYPD Precincts 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, and 52, while Patrol Borough Bronx South, headquartered at the 40th Precinct in the South Bronx, comprises NYPD Precincts 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, and 45. Read more about the increase in headcount in each command here.
Despite the uptick in year-to-date major crime categories in the above-referenced precincts, the police commissioner announced on June 3 that, citywide, the NYPD delivered the fewest murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims in recorded history for the first five months of the year.
She said year to date, citywide murders were down 20.9% (102 vs. 129), the lowest level ever recorded for the first five months of any year, beating the previous citywide record of 113, set in 2014 and 2017. She said citywide shootings were down 5.7% with 247 total incidents, surpassing the previous citywide record of 262 set in 2025, and citywide shooting victims were down 7.1% with 289 total victims citywide, surpassing the previous citywide low of 309 set in 2019.

She said the NYPD also broke other records in May, saying there were two fewer citywide shooting incidents compared to the previous citywide record low set in 2025 (51 vs. 53), and seven fewer citywide shooting victims than the previous citywide record also set in 2025 (58 vs. 65).
She said overall citywide major crime decreased 10.6% (9,662 vs. 10,809) with 1,147 fewer citywide reported crimes compared to last May, and added that year to date, major citywide crime was down 6.2% (44,955 vs. 47,929) with reductions in all five boroughs.
She said additionally, the NYPD continued to deliver historic lows in citywide crime in New York City’s public housing with the fewest citywide murders, shooting incidents, shooting victims, and robberies for the first five months of any year in recorded history.

“Across our city, the NYPD is delivering on its mission to keep New Yorkers safe,” said Tisch. “With record lows in murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims, as well as the safest start to the year in public housing, and continued reductions in subway crime, New Yorkers across every corner of our city are benefitting from a police department that is focused and strategic.”
She added, “These accomplishments are the result of a precision policing approach that follows the data, goes after guns, takes down gangs, and puts our officers where and when they are needed most. In the month of May, crime plunged by 10.6% citywide. As we enter the summer and prepare for an unprecedented number of large-scale events, the men and women of the NYPD will continue to put in the hard work necessary to keep New York City safe.”

Tisch said the NYPD’s sustained efforts to dismantle violent gangs have also contributed to reductions in shootings citywide and the number of guns taken off the streets. She said so far this year, NYPD detectives have carried out 20 gang-related takedowns, and the department has seized nearly 2,000 guns.
She said to address the rise in domestic violence incidents, a new Domestic Violence Unit within the Detective Bureau has been created, a streamlined unit with 450 domestic violence investigators. So far this year, the commissioner said citywide domestic violence arrests are up 2.9%.
She said May saw a 10.4% decrease in citywide reported rape incidents (172 vs. 192) compared to the same month last year. She said in September 2024, legislative changes enacted through the Rape is Rape Act rightfully broadened the legal definition of rape in New York State to include additional forms of sexual assault.

| Housing | 459 | 519 | -60 | -11.6% |
| Shooting Incidents | 51 | 53 | -2 |
The commissioner said over the month of May, 18% (31) of all citywide reported rapes resulted from the expanded legal definition, and 26% (44) occurred before May 2026. She said year to date, citywide rapes have increased 6.7% (893 vs. 837), with 20% (175) resulting from the law change and 32% (287) occurring before 2026. She said through the creation of the first-in-the-nation Gender-Based Violence Policy and Training Unit, the NYPD has enhanced its work with advocates to encourage all survivors of sexual assault to come forward and report these incidents.
Tisch went on to say that retail theft continued a dramatic decline, falling 15% citywide (3,851 vs. 4,528) in May compared to the same period last year. She said for the year, retail theft has declined in all five boroughs, leading to an 18.8% reduction citywide. The commissioner said the decline reflects the department’s focused approach to addressing retail theft: identifying crime patterns, deploying resources at high-propensity locations during peak hours, and shifting from pass-through enforcement to sustained investigations.

The commissioner went on to say that, as a whole, The Bronx continues to lead the city in crime reductions, with the largest year-to-date decrease in major crime of any borough, down 11%. She said the borough also saw the greatest reduction citywide in auto thefts, down 27.1% for the year, and experienced a 15.4% borough-wide drop in robbery, a 13.7% borough-wide drop in burglary, and a 13.1% borough-wide drop in grand larceny for the month.
Tisch referenced the above-mentioned implementation of the division of the borough into north and south command centers on May 20 as a more focused and effective approach to fighting crime in The Bronx. She said since the split, the newly created Patrol Borough Bronx South had the largest decrease in year-to-date index crimes with a 14.5% reduction.

Tisch went on to say that last year was the safest year in New York City’s subway system since 2009, excluding the pandemic years. Building on that progress, she said major citywide subway crime is down 1.1% (905 vs. 915) year to date, and down 6.5% (187 vs. 200) for the month of May citywide. She said there were zero shooting incidents and shooting victims in the subway system in May, and added that citywide grand larceny (major theft) is down 7.2% (436 vs. 470) for the year.
Data-Driven Deployment: Violence Reduction
To address youth violence, Tisch said the department implemented its Youth Violence Safety Zones, areas where young people are most at risk e.g. commuter corridors, bus stops, and routes to and from school. Since its inception in September 2025, Tisch said overall youth-related crime citywide is down 52.7% (185 vs. 391), citywide shooting incidents are down 61.9% (8 vs. 21), and citywide shooting victims are down 60.9% (9 vs. 23) in such zones during deployment hours.
Combatting Hate Crimes
The commissioner went on to say that the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force (HCTF) investigates allegations of hate crimes and bias-motivated incidents. After an incident is flagged as a possible hate crime, she said HCTF investigates and determines, in consultation with the NYPD Legal Bureau, whether it constitutes a hate crime under New York State law.
Reported Citywide Hate Crimes: May 2026

She said if an incident is deemed a hate crime under the law, it will be categorized as a confirmed hate crime. Tisch said the NYPD provides data on confirmed hate crimes along with the universe of reported hate crimes, whether or not they are ultimately confirmed as hate crimes by the HCTF. She said such disclosure of both sets of numbers enhances transparency and reflects best practices in connection with hate crime reporting.
In May 2026, she said the HCTF confirmed 68 incidents as hate crimes and there were 98 incidents reported as hate crimes. She said confirmed hate crimes are up by 74.4% (68 vs. 39) compared to the previous May, and added that more than half of all confirmed hate crimes for the month, or 60.3%, were anti-Jewish, despite Jewish New Yorkers making up only 10% of the city’s population.

Tisch said year to date, the number of confirmed citywide hate crimes increased by 8.6%, with 21 more confirmed hate crime incidents compared to the year prior (265 vs. 244).
During Game 5 of the New York Knicks NBA Championship game against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night, June 13, the NYPD said, “Large crowds of unruly fans began to form at various places north of Madison Square Garden between Fifth and Ninth Avenues. It is estimated that those crowds ultimately grew to tens of thousands of people. As the game progressed and then following the game, the crowds became increasingly destructive, and there were many incidents of incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior.”
They said a 17-year-old victim was shot at 43rd Street and Broadway and was transported to the hospital by the NYPD because an ambulance could not access 43rd Street due to the crowds taking it over. They said one gun was recovered at the scene, and three people of interest are in custody. A video shared on Instagram by @sbnbasketball shows a chaotic scene as people dispersed in panic after seemingly hearing shots fired in Times Square. It’s unknown if the video relates to the same shooting of the 17-year-old or not.
They said there were four slashings/stabbings, and five school buses were set on fire/destroyed with bats and people jumping on them. They said the school buses were being used to transport people from Manhattan to the MetLife Stadium for various World Cup games.
They said five NYPD cars badly damaged, after people used bats on the cars and jumped on top of them. They said the front and back windshields were shattered, the windows were shattered and multiple other personal vehicles were also destroyed. They said people also lit fireworks among large crowds, climbed on top of light poles, traffic lights, structures, and scaffolding, and large physical fights broke out.

They said streets and avenues were also overtaken by large crowds who they said refused to disperse, blocking vehicular traffic for several hours.
They said in total, there were 63 people arrested in connection to the duration / aftermath of the Knicks game, and among the charges, were an assault on a police officer, criminal possession of weapon (gun), criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration.
They said 10 members of the NYPD were injured, including one member of the NYPD who was punched in the face and another who was struck with a glass bottle.
The Knicks ultimately achieved a historic win (94-90) over the Spurs, sealing the NBA championship for the first time in 53 years after once again trailing for much of the game only to bounce back (no pun intended) in the later stage of the last quarter. A citywide ticker tape parade and City Hall reception has been announced by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to mark the victory and is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 18.
