This week, we asked readers their opinion on the current situation in Iran, and if they think America could be attacked at home in retaliation for having started a bombing campaign, together with Israel, against Iran on Feb. 28, killing the Iranian leader, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as around 175 people, mostly children, after a school was struck. Since then, Reuters report that around 3,134 Iranians have been killed, including 207 children.

“I don’t like it but you have to respect the Iranians. Do you know why? Three thousand years ago, the Greeks and the Persians had a big war, The Battle of Marathon, but then later they became very good friends. Would you like it if I came to your house and moved your furniture? You wouldn’t like that, right? I think that he (U.S. President Donald Trump) did the right thing because if they were going to use a nuke on us, he wanted to be prepared. They did knock out the nukes last year, yes. Yes, I believe we could be attacked here.”

“This war should never have happened. The administration currently in the White House is only milking America and its citizens. This president has only defended dictatorships and is not taking care of America’s business. Yes, I think we can be attacked.”

“By now, it has every appearance that a few generations of difficult and often contradictory Middle East policies have finally run off the rails. The pot is boiling over. The outcome and the aftermath of all this remain highly uncertain.”

“President Trump started an unnecessary war without thinking things through. He needs to be removed before nukes are launched. Do I think we could be attacked? Part of me thinks we deserve to be.”

“We could always be attacked at home. I’m concerned about President Trump’s motives, which are never good. It’s probably about oil, as he makes deals with oil companies regarding Venezuela’s oil. Then, he claims that global warming is a ‘hoax,’ the fact that Iran’s nuclear program was a danger and needed to be checked. I am glad that one ‘supreme leader’ is dead, another may be wounded, [and] the fact that Iran’s military has been decimated. I am also glad that Israel has control over Iran’s skies.”

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
