New York Lt. Gov. Anthony Delgado and his running mate, India Walton, have suspended their gubernatorial campaign, his team announced Tuesday, Feb. 10. Delgado had just announced on Feb. 4 that Walton would be his running mate.
In a statement Delgado said, “I’ve decided to end my campaign for governor of New York. After much consideration, I’ve concluded that there simply is no viable path forward, and though my campaign has come to an end, I fully intend to do all I can in our effort to build a more humane, affordable and equitable state that serves all New Yorkers. I will also support Democrats in our effort to hold the line against Trump and take back our democracy.”
He added, “I do not make this decision lightly, particularly given that so many have poured their belief into our campaign and are desperate to be given a voice. To those who have supported this effort, especially my incredible campaign team and volunteers, I can’t begin to express my gratitude for each and every one of you.”
The statement continued, “And a special thanks to India Walton, who joined this campaign because she shares this vision and I know will also continue working toward it. To everyone else who believed in us: Please never forget that your voice matters, and its power extends well beyond any one campaign or any one politician. You must always hold people in office accountable, because at the end of the day, they work for you. We, and I, work for you.”
He added, “Ultimately, this decision for me comes down to my belief that to walk with purpose, is to walk with love. That belief has animated this campaign. That is why Lacey and I entered politics nearly a decade ago. That is the lesson we try to impart on our young boys. And that is the same spirit I will carry with me as I continue to serve the people of New York as Lieutenant Governor.”
He concluded, “It was the most unexpected and huge honor to be considered and brought into the team so seamlessly and with such care,” said Walton. “I’m sure this is not the last folks will hear from team Delgado/Walton!”
As reported, Delgado launched his campaign, positioning himself as a progressive challenger to incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in June 2, 2025, after speaking at Mt. Ollie Baptist Church in Brooklyn on June 1 about “a better future for our kids and communities,” and having announced in February 2025 that he would not seek another term as lieutenant governor.
In a short video campaign message aimed at delivering “bold, transformational change for New Yorkers” of around a minute and a half long, Delgado is described by a narrator as the son of working class parents, born and raised in New York, a Colgate University attendee, an Oxford and Harvard Law School graduate, a hip hop artist and man of faith.

Meanwhile, last week, the governor announced that former City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams would be joining Hochul on the ballot as her running mate and next lieutenant governor.
Hochul beat Republican, Lee Zeldin, now administrator of the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) in the Trump administration, with 53.1% of the vote during a nasty general election season in 2022.
She won the Democratic Primary earlier that year with 67.4%, overcoming challengers, public advocate Jumaane Williams, who won around 19.3% of the vote, and Congressman Tom Suozzi (NY-3) who won around 13%.
Hochul gave her reaction to Delgado running against her during an interview on Pix Politics on June 19. Among other questions, when she was asked if Delgado should step down as lieutenant governor given he has effectively been stripped of his responsibilities, she said, “I don’t really care.”
