NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) is inviting artists to submit applications for consideration as part of a Request for Proposal for various signature event art installations across new York City.

DOT invites eligible artists to submit proposals in response to its Request for Proposals (RFP) for the opportunity to display an art installation at an NYC DOT Signature Event, namely Car-Free Earth Day or Summer Streets, with applications due Feb. 8, by 11.59 p.m. Apply here for this particular RFP.

For more information, or to ask specific questions, NYC DOT Art will be hosting an informational webinar Thursday, Jan. 29, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sending questions in advance is appreciated, DOT officials said. Questions can be sent either via direct message on via Instagram to @nyc_dotart, or via email to arts@dot.nyc.gov. Attendees should register in advance via Zoom.

Additionally, DOT is also inviting interested US-based artists to submit past work examples in response to a separate Mural Artist Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the opportunity to develop and install temporary murals on asphalt pedestrianized spaces, bike lane barriers, and other sites. DOT officials said applications are due Feb. 8, by 11.59 p.m.

They said selected artists will be shortlisted, and as projects become available, NYC DOT Art will invite up to five artists to participate in a phone interview and may be required to develop a preliminary design proposal before final selection for a project. Apply for the Mural Artist RFQ here.

As reported, in the past, though the final products were usually very beautiful, Bronx artists have not necessarily always been involved/selected to lead local Bronx-based mural projects so this is an opportunity for local talent to own their hood, take the lead, and let their talents shine.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
