80th Assembly District Candidates Debate Tonight on BronxTalk

Three of the four candidates who are vying for the opportunity to represent the 80th Assembly District (parts of Norwood, Allerton, Morris Park, Pelham Gardens) will be debating live tonight at 9 p.m. on Bronxnet’s BronxTalk show with host Gary Axelbank. (Cablevision channel 67, Fios 33) Despite numerous attempts to get her to participate, BronxTalk says incumbent Naomi Rivera has declined to attend the debate. One of the biggest criticisms of Rivera has been her lack of visibility and poor attendance record. As is tradition on BronxTalk, you can bet there will be an empty chair sitting on stage to emphasize Rivera’s absence. Appearing, however, will be Rivera’s three enthusiastic challengers: Adam Bermudez, Irene Estrada-Rukaj and Mark Gjonaj. (Editor’s note: Links are to campaign websites. We will have profiles of all four candidates over the next two days.)

As a warm-up, below is a video of Bronx journalists — Kate Pastor and Adam Wisnieski of the Riverdale Press and the Bronx Times‘ Bob Kappstatter — to discuss Bronx politics in general and the 80th Assembly District, specifically, on BronxTalk two weeks ago.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
