Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced Aug. 15 that a Yonkers woman who worked as a guidance counselor at a Bronx high school has been indicted on third-degree rape, and additional charges for repeatedly having sex with a teenage boy who was a student in her school.

According to the NYPD, as of the end of July, citywide rape incidents increased by 33.1% in July compared to the same period in 2024 (193 vs. 145). Police said the rise in reported incidents is partly attributed to September 2024’s legislative changes broadening the legal definition of rape in New York State, which now includes additional forms of sexual assault.

They said many reported cases involved individuals known to each other. NYPD officials said the department continues to encourage survivors of sexual assault to come forward and report these incidents.

In other crime-related news, as of end of July, the NYPD said over the past three and a half years, the NYPD has taken more than 22,900 illegal guns off New York City’s streets, including more than 3,100 seized in 2025 alone.

In July, they said citywide murders declined 49% (25 vs. 49), and in the first seven months of 2025, decreased by 26.4% compared to the same period last year. They said other major citywide crime categories also declined in July, including burglary, which fell by 14.2% (950 vs. 1,107), robbery dropped by 7.5% (1,413 vs. 1,528), felony assault was down by 8.2% (2,575 vs. 2,806), and grand larceny decreased by 4% (4,253 vs. 4,428). They said citywide grand larceny auto also declined 3.6% year-to-date, holding steady in July compared to last year.

In the transit system, they said citywide crime dropped by 8% (149 vs.162) in July, to its lowest level for any July in recorded history, excluding the COVID-period of 2020-2021 and so far this year, they said citywide crime in the subway system is in its third consecutive year of decline.

They said citywide housing crime also declined by 15.8% (454 vs. 539) for the month and citywide retail theft fell 14.4% in July and is down for the third consecutive year, with a year-to-date decline of 11%.

They said number of citywide incidents investigated by the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force also decreased by 50%.

Editor’s Note: Compstat, the NYPD’s major crime database, was down prior to the publication of our most recent print edition published Aug. 7. We usually include the latest crime statistics for the 46th, 50th, and 52nd Precincts in each print edition but were unable to do for the latest edition due to the database being down so we are including them here instead.
