Van Cortlandt Jewish Center Invites the Community to a Free Chanukah Celebration

VAN CORTLANDT JEWISH Center (VCJC), seen here on April 14, 2025, has been located at 3880 Sedgwick Avenue in Van Cortlandt Village for the last 60 years. In mid-May 2024, members voted to sell the center to a private developer and to return as partial tenants, despite opposition from some members and local residents.

The Van Cortlandt Jewish Center (VCJC), located at 3880 Sedgwick Avenue in Van Cortlandt Village, invites people of all faiths to a joyful community Chanukah party at the center on Monday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m., marking the lighting of the second candle.

Representatives of VCJC, which they said is located next to the construction site, said the evening will feature live entertainment by well-known musician and singer, Chaim Zadok, dreidel games and gifts for children, $1 raffles with a wide array of exciting prizes, and traditional holiday treats including freshly made latkes and jelly donuts. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend.

They said VCJC looks forward to bringing neighbors together to share in the warmth and light of the holiday season.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
