Thousands Line the Streets for 39th Bronx Puerto Rican Day Parade Despite Rainy Day

The 39th edition of the Bronx Puerto Rican Day Parade was proudly celebrated on Saturday, May 10, and not even the rain could dampen the spirits of the parade marchers and spectators from sharing in the joyous occasion.

Kicking off at 11 a.m. at East 165th Street and Grand Concourse, the cherished annual event was led by the parade committee’s president, Maribel Mercado and the board committee members, bringing together the Puerto Rican community and friends to showcase the island’s vibrant culture, heritage, and accomplishments.

This year’s theme was “Unidos, Somos Más Fuertes,” which translates to “United, We Are Stronger.”

The parade also featured the joyful winners of the Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade Pageant, who proudly displayed their crowns and smiles, and it also included various organizations, businesses, and individuals who had traveled from as far away as New Jersey and Connecticut.

Various parade participants dressed as action heroes entertained the crowds along the route.

Among the winners of the various pageants and honorees this year were 1st Prince (caballero division) Marlon Derek (from Naguabo, PR), (youth / juventil division) Angel Guzman, and the Cultural King / Rey Cultural (caballero division) Rubén Santana (from Comerío, PR) who waved to the crowds along the route.

Also waving to the crowds on one  of the floats were Infanti 2nd Princess Melania Perez (from Las Piedras, PR)1st Princess Emmaleah Heredia (from Utuado, PR), and The Queen / Reina Liana Ann Plasencia (from Humacao, PR).

Representatives from NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln also participated in the parade, some aboard a packed float, while others walked alongside it.

The “Coqui” was also seen marching in the parade bringing much joy to the many kids in attendance.

City Councilman Rafael Salamanca Jr. (C.D. 17), who later lost his bid for the Bronx borough presidency in the June primary, was also in attendance on the day.

Huge crowds were seen waving flags, donning rain jackets and some under umbrellas, determined to enjoy the day despite the weather.
