The Changing Bronx Political Landscape Both Big and Small

It began at the top. Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., who’s helmed the borough presidency for 10 years, announced in late January that he will no longer seek the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor, dashing the hopes of many that Diaz would be the first Latino mayor in city history. Just over a month later, as many political observers were still processing the Diaz news, one of his closest allies and power player, Assemblyman Marcos Crespo, who happens to be the Bronx Democratic Party boss, announced he’ll be done with public life, opening his seat for the Democratic

Talks on Reforming Bail Reform Set to Take Place Across the Bronx

With concerns on bail reform contributing to a spike in crime, and a dis-information campaign on the new measure fueled by those concerned, Community Board 7 is holding a forum to discuss the future of the state’s new criminal justice reforms, and what these sweeping changes actually mean for the Bronx. The meeting by CB7 is scheduled for on March 12 at 2530 Jerome Ave. at 6:30 p.m.  Bail reform eliminates cash bail for misdemeanors, meaning that accused persons can no longer be held in jail before their trial if they can’t afford to get out. Judges can still place

In the Bronx, State of the Borough Speech Offers Personal Retrospective

Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. threw away the oft-formulaic State of the Borough speech he’s delivered over the last decade for a retrospective of sorts while honoring a who’s who of civic activists, educators, and captains of industry. His penultimate speech at Borough Hall comes a few weeks after announcing he won’t be running for New York City mayor after all. Diaz, 47, told reporters he’s “at peace” with his decision, mentioning that the Bronx certainly has a crop of elected officials ready to pick up the baton. He mentioned by name Assembly Members Marcos Crespo, Michael Blake, Victor Pichardo,

Bankruptcy Woes for Bedford Green House Builder Delay Completion

An impending residential building spearheaded by Project Renewal in Bedford Park has would-be tenants lining up at the door. But despite a sign reading the project would be completed by fall 2019, the project deadline is now being pushed back, delaying any plans for prospective residents to move in. The Bedford Green House’s path to completion may be rocky for Project Renewal, and applicants are still waiting, but their contingency plans could have the building completed soon enough to have tenants feeling a warm breeze from their rooftop garden, surrounded by fruits and fish ponds. It was thought that the

New West Bronx Housing Executive Director Looks to Build Legacy Started by Predecessor

As Sally Dunford was preparing for retirement as executive director of West Bronx Housing, a job she’s held on to for 28 years, there was already someone she had in mind to succeed her. It didn’t require any sifting of resumes or recommendations, but an understanding of who already demonstrated the capability in doing the work. It came from Joshua Stephenson, the former constituent services director for Councilman Andrew Cohen, who had worked with Dunford over the last two years to settle housing grievances for tenants living within Cohen’s 11th Council District. The work was already familiar to him, and

City Takes Steps to Improve Safety at Shelter. But Where’s the Data?

Peace officers trained by the NYPD have been assigned at the Jerome Avenue Men’s Shelter (JAMS), but it’s unclear whether it has made a difference since city data provided shows an overall decline of crime around shelters in the Bronx. Previously, the 200-bed men’s shelter for the mentally ill had contracted a security team of eight guards from a private company to ensure safety at the facility.  The new peace officers from the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) are overseen by NYPD and are considered better trained to deal with security issues including arrest procedures and restraining
