The NYPD has launched a murder inquiry after an 18-year-old male youth who was shot earlier this month in Fordham Manor died. A male teen has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing.
Police said that on Saturday, June 7, at around 9.45p.m., officers from the 52 Precinct responded to a 911 call for a person who had been shot at 18 West Kingsbridge Road (opposite the Kingsbridge Armory).
“Upon arrival, officers were informed that an 18-year-old male was shot in the buttocks by an unidentified individual after a verbal dispute,” an NYPD spokesperson said. “The individual fled the location in an unknown direction. EMS responded and transported the victim to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.”
Police said the victim succumbed to his injuries on Monday, June 16, and pursuant to an ongoing investigation, the incident was reclassified as a homicide by the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
The deceased has been identified as Rize Ashmeade from the Allerton section of The Bronx.
Police said a 17-year-old male youth was arrested on Tuesday, June 17, at 10.30 p.m. in connection to the incident and has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. He is presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
Just a few days before the shooting, on Tuesday, June 3, elected officials and labor unions had joined the Northwest Bronx Community & Clergy Coalition (NWBCCC), NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and 8th Regiment Partners, the winning bidder behind the latest redevelopment project for the Kingsbridge Armory entitled, “The Kingsbridge Center/El Centro Kingsbridge,” at the Armory to announce a new partnership in the context of its redevelopment which has resulted in 20% community ownership of the site.
