Bringing Health Awareness From Long Island to Norwood

More than 40 residents took part in a free health clinic held on Monday, March 12, outside of the Safe Medical Care Centerat 3099 Bainbridge Avenue in Norwood. Participants underwent free blood pressure screening, blood sugar screening and free flu shots. Medical students from the Long Island University’s APhA-ASP Chapter of the American Pharmacist Association teamed up with Safe Medical Care and plan to return for another health fair in the spring. The young medical professionals of Long Island University expect to return to Norwood in April with more free health screenings.

Jessica Shapiro, RD, does one-on-one nutrition counseling with Montefiore Health System employees entitled to free nutrition counseling. She said one of the most common reasons people feel like they are unable to make healthy choices is time. People simply just don’t have enough of it. Whether someone works many hours or multiple jobs, commutes far, or have families, Shapiro said those commitments often leave people with little time and energy to cook for themselves.

Neighborhood Notes: Free Immigration Service

Community Board 7 has once again banned a rancorous community activist after he raised his voice at a recent Veterans Committee meeting. Anthony Rivieccio was banned by Board District Manager Ischia Bravo after lashing out at the board for changing a planned breakfast honoring veterans. Rivieccio had been banned by the two previous district managers, inspiring one of them to erect a divider between the waiting area and where employees sit. Just what would become of a plan to rezone a large chunk of Jerome Avenue remains to be seen. The New York City Council’s Land Use Committee voted to approve the rezoning on March 6. The rezoning paves the way for developers to build as much as 4,000 units of affordable housing by changing zoning rules between 184th and 167th streets, allowing for buildings as high as 19 stories. Something old can be new again at the annual Bedford Mosholu Community Association (BMCA) Flea Market scheduled for March 10. In the basement of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, 360 Bedford Pk. Blvd., residents can check out some of the offerings up for sale at modest prices. Much of these knickknacks include books, appliances, picture frames, and music items, to a name.
