New York Attorney General Letitia James broke the seal of an extensive 107-count indictment last Thursday. The indictment charges five individuals for their roles in a gun-and-drug-trafficking scheme operating throughout the Bronx and upper Manhattan. The investigation, dubbed “Operation Iron Empire,” was a joint effort of the Attorney General’s Organized Crime Task Force, the New York Drug Enforcement Task Force, and the New York Strike Force–a unit comprised of federal, state, and local law enforcement. “It is a fact, illegal drug trafficking and gun violence threaten the lives of New Yorkers,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge Ray Donovan. “

More than five dozen Bronxites attended a town hall meeting hosted by Community Board 7 and state Sen. Gustavo Rivera where Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) officials once again presented their Bronx Bus Network Redesign plan that would update most bus routes across the borough in the name of savings and efficiency for the cash-strapped agency. But despite a sign reading the project would be completed by fall 2019, the project deadline is now being pushed back, delaying any plans for prospective residents to move in. Orchard Beach may be off season now, but it didn’t stop some brave Bronxites to take a dip into the freezing waters for the annual Bronx Polar Bear Swim at Orchard Beach. Co-hosted by BronxNet Television and BronxWorks, the annual Dip Against Homelessness on Feb. 9 doubled as a donation drive for the homeless during the coldest time of the year.
