In a sharp break from his predecessor’s lenient approach to development in the borough, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz has applied the brakes to a city-backed proposal to turn the Kingsbridge Armory into a shopping mall.

Reconfirming long-held beliefs by local watchdogs and activists, the city comptroller’s office released a report recently saying that, from the beginning, the Croton Water Filtration Plant being built in Van Cortlandt Park has been, and continues to be, a huge, money-eating disaster.

Pedro Espada Jr.’s new district office, eight months in the making, sits seven floors above the street in a swank office building on Fordham Road. It’s beautiful. New carpeting, new paint job. Giant photos of the controversial Bronx State Senator adorn the back wall. One shows Espada wearing a suit and red boxing gloves.

It’s a fitting image because the pugnacious Espada – his ringtone is "Eye of the Tiger," a song made famous in the "Rocky" films – literally fought his way into this office

The Bronx News Network, in conjunction with BronxTalk, the cable television talk show hosted by Gary Axelbank on BRONXNET on Aug. 31, held a debate between Fernando Cabrera and Yudelka Tapia, candidates in the 14th District City Council race.

In the heavily Democratic Bronx, City Council elections are determined in the primaries, where only a small percentage of registered voters actually turn out to cast their ballots. This year, despite two compelling council races – in the 11th and 14th districts – looks to be more of the same.

Queens Councilman and Comptroller candidate John Liu met with the Norwood News at the end of August. Liu, a graduate of Bronx Science, was the only Comptroller candidate to explain his candidacy and qualifications to the News.
