Crime Watch: Police Video of Suspected Bedford Park Cell Phone Bandit

Since Aug. 27, police say one young man has robbed seven women, between the ages of 16 and 52, of their cell phones in Bedford Park. The suspect is being described by police as black, between 20 and 25 years old, between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs between 130 and 160 pounds. Police have video of the suspect (shown above) and are looking for help identifying and locating him.

Letter to the Editor: Stop “Stop and Frisk”

With respect to the front page story in your March 8 – 21 issue regarding “stop and frisk,” it seems that for a police officer to use his authority to stop and search anyone at random and without cause is truly reprehensible. No one should be subjected to random frisking at the whim of a policeman merely because he can. Ditto for detaining anyone for questioning without any good cause. Imagine a nation that does not know where its residents were born, how much they make, what type of housing they are living in, where they work or how they get to their jobs. This nation would not even know what percent of its population had finished high school or college, what type of heating fuel households are using, how many are going without health insurance, what the divorce rate is, or where its veterans are living.

A murder, two shootings and a stabbing in recent days have shaken the northwest Bronx, which is already reeling from a string of brutal robberies that caused the commander of the 52nd Precinct to call in for reinforcements.

Bronx Notes: Districting Commission Hearing Tonight at BCC

The New York City Districting Commissions will be holding five hearings in New York City, all open to the public. The Districting Commission determines districts for the City Council and they seeking public input before they make their decisions. The Bronx hearing will take place Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Bronx Community College Hall of Fame Playhouse, 2155 University Ave. You must pre-register for the opportunity to speak at the hearing and can do so by signing up online at http://nyc.gov/districting. Note that speakers will be given the chance to speak up to three minutes of speaking time maximum.
