Police said there were no reported injuries following shots fired in the Fordham Manor section of The Bronx in the early hours of Friday, May 2, further to unconfirmed reports of a possible shooting. They separately confirmed further to an unconfirmed report of a person shot in Norwood later but still in the early hours of Friday morning that there were no injuries reported.

A police spokesperson said that at 1.58 a.m. at Valentine Avenue and East Fordham Road in Fordham Manor, there was no shooting and no person shot. The spokesperson added, “It was an emotionally disturbed person who called 911.” Read our latest health check on how to manage anxiety here and our previous health check on managing our mental health here.

Separately, the spokesperson confirmed, further to a separate unconfirmed report on the Citizens’ App of a person shot at 3435 Gates Place in Norwood at around 4.49 a.m. on Friday, that it was a “falsified call.” The spokesperson said, “A 12-year-old caller was on the phone stating that he heard possible gunshots. Officers arrived on scene and canvassed the area, couldn’t find anything, no reports of any shootings, nobody at the hospital, nothing going on.”

The spokesperson added that a 911 operator had said it was a 12-year-old who had called but police couldn’t confirm if the age of the child was correct, just that it was “a child caller.”

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
