A 42-year-old man has been arrested for the rape and assault of a woman in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx early on Tuesday morning, Sept. 16.

Police said that the incident occurred at around 5.30 a.m., when police received a 911 call regarding a [sexual and physical] assault in the vicinity of 5716 Broadway. Police said, “Upon arrival, it was reported to officers that an unidentified individual approached a 33-year-old female victim, punched her in the face, and sexually [assaulted] her.”

They said the suspect fled the location on foot westbound on West 230th Street, EMS responded and transported the victim to a local area hospital in stable condition, and the investigation remained ongoing. Police later said Nicholas DeJesus of Manhattan was arrested the same day at 5.30 p.m., within the confines of the 41st Precinct, which covers the Bronx neighborhoods of Hunts Point and Longwood.

They said he was charged with two counts of rape, sex abuse, assault and harassment. He is presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.

As reported, a 65-year-old woman was raped at knifepoint in the Williamsbridge Oval park in Norwood last month. Police said the rape was reported on Monday, Sept. 15, and took place on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at around 11 a.m. inside the Williamsbridge Oval Park, in the vicinity of Reservoir Place and Reservoir Oval East.

As reported, year-to-date rape statistics have climbed in the 46th, 50th, and 52nd Precincts (the latter being the precinct in which the latest rape took place). However, an NYPD official from the special victims unit told Norwood News on Sept. 15 that a change in classification around rape / sexual assault crime statistics in 2024 has recently caused a general widespread climb in rape statistics.

In relation to the Kingsbridge rape, which was first reported by The NY Daily News, the outlet reported that DeJesus is allegedly an ex-con who called himself Romeo and gave the victim his cell number which ultimately led to his arrest.
