Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC) hosted its annual free breast cancer screening event at its Breast Care Center at 1250 Waters Place, in the east Bronx on Saturday, Oct. 11, to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In New York, approximately 16,700 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually. MECCC’s goal through its year-round free screenings, clinical care, and research is to reduce the incidence of cancer, and when cancer is found, to treat it at a stage when the disease is most curable.

According to Montefiore Einstein, MECCC is among the elite one percent of National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S., and is ranked in the top one percent of all U.S. hospitals for cancer care, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Meanwhile, Essen Health Care is offering free mammograms on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. at 2445 Arthur Avenue in the Belmont section of The Bronx. The event will include breast exams, same-day mammograms, and Natera genetic testing, a clinical genetic testing company specializing in non-invasive, cell-free DNA (cfDNA) testing for women’s health, oncology, and organ health. Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
