Norwood News received reports that a fire broke out in University Heights on Saturday, June 19, and that the cause of the fire is possibly being treated as suspicious.

Citizen’s App users posted that a fire was reported shortly after midday on Saturday on the second floor of a building located at 130 West 183rd Street in University Heights. An unverified video posted to the app showed several fire trucks at the scene with a ladder deployed.

 

Citizen users later posted at around 12.30 that firefighters at the scene confirmed that the fire had been brought under control, but that the cause of the fire was apparently being deemed suspicious. The users said that FDNY officials said fire marshals had been requested to investigate the incident.

The FDNY had also tweeted at 12.11 p.m. the same day that all hands were requested to respond to the said location regarding a fire in a multiple dwelling. FDNY officials tweeted once again at 12.30 that the fire had been bought under control.

 

Norwood News reached out to the FDNY for more information as to the cause of the fire, and whether there were any injuries. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

 

On Sunday, June 20, the FDNY confirmed a fire had been reported in a 6-story multiple dwelling at 12.02 in the afternoon on June 19, at 130 West 183^rd Street, and that 12 FDNY units responded comprising about 60 members. The official said the fire was placed under control at 12.29 in the afternoon and that there were no injuries.

 

We asked the FDNY if the cause of the fire was deemed suspicious and they responded, saying the cause was still under investigation. We will continue to follow up with the FDNY on the cause.
