Be Healthy: BP, Hospitals Tout Tour de Bronx Benefits
On Monday afternoon, Bronx Borough president Ruben Diaz joined forces with Transportation Alternatives, Montefiore Medical Center, St. Barnabas Hospital and the Bronx Lebanon Medical Center to officially let the world know that the 18th annual Tour de Bronx — the region’s largest free cycling event — will be happening and it will be a good thing for a borough that was recently named the most unhealthy county in the state.

Mosholu Montefiore Senior Center, 3450 DeKalb Ave., hosts activities for adults ages 60 and over, including flea markets on Oct. 5 and 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Senior Saturday, Oct. 6 from 1:15 to 4:30 p.m. featuring salsa dance lessons (also on Oct. 13 and 27); trip to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum on Oct. 10 (call for details); legal clinic on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.; and movies: “The Italian Job,’ on Oct. 10, and “The Magnificent Seven,” on Oct. 17 (free popcorn), both at 12:30 p.m. For more information call (718) 798-6601.
Bronx Notes: Districting Commission Hearing Tonight at BCC
The New York City Districting Commissions will be holding five hearings in New York City, all open to the public. The Districting Commission determines districts for the City Council and they seeking public input before they make their decisions. The Bronx hearing will take place Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Bronx Community College Hall of Fame Playhouse, 2155 University Ave. You must pre-register for the opportunity to speak at the hearing and can do so by signing up online at http://nyc.gov/districting. Note that speakers will be given the chance to speak up to three minutes of speaking time maximum. Bronx Notes: Sickle Cell Awareness Fair on Saturday
The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore is hosting a Sickle Cell Awareness Month event and fair for families with children living with sickle cell disease on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Cherkasky Auditiorium inside Montefiore’s Moses Campus (at the Gun Hill Road entrance near Rochambeau Avenue). Learn about: managing your pain, new treatments for sickle cell pain, what is safe and with is not, alternative therapies, staying healthy. Lunch will be served. Bronx Notes: 52nd Precinct Community Council Meeting Tonight
The 52nd Precinct Community Council will meet tonight, Thursday, Sept. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cosmopolitan AME Church, 39 W. 190th St. For more information, call (718) 220-5824. Council meetings offer residents within the 52nd Precinct — the neighborhoods of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham, Kingsbridge and University Heights — to voice their concerns and discuss crime and public safety issues with precinct leaders.
