Residents, Holding to Bedford Park Home, Plug Away

For the past six months, the small band of tenants at 267 E. 202nd St., a 2-story apartment building, have dealt with an uncertainty that hasn’t quite been resolved: are they staying or going? It’s a question that’s been on the minds of these tenants who’ve built lives there for as long as 30 years. “Everybody’s been living in that building for so long,” said Cynthia Garcia, a tenant and single mother of two children. “Everybody’s like family.” The piece of property, resting at the tip of Briggs Avenue in a sleepy part of Bedford Park, remains a source of

Negotiations between city officials and the developers of the Kingsbridge National Ice Center (KNIC) were not only left at a standstill after a hearing last Thursday, but without its presiding judge. “This appears to be going nowhere, so let me just share something,” said Bronx Supreme Court Judge Ruben Franco, half hour into the proceeding, “this may be it for me on this case.” The two sides had returned to court after Franco recommended the lease to the Kingsbridge Armory, which would be home to the ice center, be temporarily released to KNIC so it can pursue construction-funding options. At 13th Congressional District Debate, Minus Three Candidates, a Tamer Joust

The candidates for the 13th Congressional District race squared off in a penultimate debate before the June 28 primary, this time focusing more on policy and staving off mudslinging. The debate, hosted and televised on BronxNet, saw six of the nine Democratic candidates—Sam Sloan, Clyde Williams, Adam Clayton Powell IV, Suzan Johnson Cook, and Mike Gallagher–take prepared questions from Gary Axelbank, the moderator. Three of the candidates—Assemblyman Guillermo Linares, Senator Adriano Espaillat, and Yohanny Caceres–were unavailable. Espaillat said last-minute business in the Albany Legislature, particularly talk on mayoral control, compelled him to stay. Linares and Caceres did not offer an explanation on their

Fordham Gas Station Plan Fuels Community Opposition

A proposal for a new BP gas station on West Fordham Road was met with strong opposition and little support from the community board whose jurisdiction covers the gas station. The gas station would be replacing a 55-space parking lot at 205 W. Fordham Rd. by Sedgwick Avenue. The plan lays out the gas station as having five pumps, a canopy and three curb cuts serving as entrances and exits. The placement of the curb cuts is what troubled Community Board 7’s Land Use/Housing Committee with respect to driver safety. West Fordham Road, a major thoroughfare, has cars traveling past

Cabrera Confirms to Norwood News He’ll Run for 33rd Senate District…Again

State Senator Gustavo Rivera, a Democrat representing the 33rd Senate District in the Bronx, told the Norwood News he thought he was going to have a quiet summer. Those plans were scrapped after hearing he would once again have to defend his Senate seat against a familiar political adversary—Councilman Fernando Cabrera. Cabrera, representing the Bronx’s 14th Council District, announced a run for the seat, confirming rumors that he would run again. His announcement goes against a request by Bronx Democratic County Committee chair Marcos Crespo to mend fences with Rivera shortly after the two squared off during the 2014 election
