Bronx Notes: VC Park Farmers Market Now Hiring Youth

Friends of Van Cortlandt Park are working in partnership with Inwood Go Green, and will be holding a Youth Operated Farmers Market Stand this summer. Every Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m., from July 10 to Aug. 28 in Van Cortlandt Park, located at 242nd Street and Broadway, stands will be selling fresh, locally-grown produce. They are looking to hire 14-20 year-olds to work the Farmers Market on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All interested must be available the last week of June for training. Working papers will be required for 14-17 year olds. All applications are available at www.vancortlandt.org and are due by June 11.

The theme was Beach Paradise and the goal was to provide local teenagers who often end up missing school and social events due to their illnesses, the opportunity to have a good time they would always remember.

Earlier today, on the corner of Futlon Avenue and E. 167th Street, Richie Powers held up a replica of the street sign dedicated in his late wife Megan Charlop’s honor. Charlop, a tireless community organizer, health educator and activist who lived in Norwood and dedicated her career to making the Bronx a better place, was killed in a bike accident two years ago.

Journalists Revisit Deadly DeKalb Fire, Reignite Housing Discussion

A decade after an electrical fire at 3569 DeKalb Ave. claimed the life of an 8-year-old Bronx boy, journalists and housing activists are still trying to find answers to the questions posed in the wake of his death–namely, how the city should enforce housing code violations and hold landlords accountable for conditions that put tenants at risk. That was the topic of a panel discussion held at Manhattan College last night, organized by the school’s Urban Affairs department, City Limits magazine and Jordan Moss, a former Norwood News editor.
