Too many of our public school students and their families are living in fear. They don’t know how new immigration policies coming from Washington might affect them. They worry about what might happen if Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents visited their school. As your Mayor, I want to send a clear message: No matter where you come from or when you got here,‎ the City of New York stands with you. I stand with you. This is your city. We want every principal and school safety agent to know how to respond if federal immigration officers come knocking. We want

“No More. Finito.” CVS Store in Norwood Closes

The doors to the CVS Pharmacy on East Gun Hill Road and Perry Avenue did not slide open anymore as the chain store closed one of its Norwood stores on March 18. “No more. Finito,” a garbage man can be heard as would-be customers unaware of the news tried entering the store. A manager quickly peered out a day after the store closed, telling a handful of customers the store has indeed closed its doors. The store, located in a large one-story building at 310 E. Cops from the 52nd Precinct have arrested a man who accidentally shoots himself, then reportedly blames it on a black man. Police say the incident happened just before 11 p.m. on Friday, March 17. Identified as 20-year-old Arthur Palombo, police say the victim/suspect was walking inside Williamsbridge Oval Park when a gun that was in his backpack had gone off, hitting him in the stomach. When police arrived, a wounded Palombo allegedly made up a story saying he was shot by a black man with a bald head who was interested in buying the gun. The Daily News reports when the

There is a new fight against obesity and it is not against food itself. While fast food may be the main culprit behind poor health, a recent study published by Montefiore Health System found unhealthy food ads are placed in low-income communities where nutritional challenges abound. The Bronx has brought in the wrong kind of attention from advertisers, according to the study conducted by Sean Lucan, M.D., M.P.H., attending physician, for Montefiore Health System’s Family and Social Medicine Department. He and colleagues from Albert Einstein College of Medicine found ads promoting candy, chips, sugary cereals and frozen pizza ads on display
