The Bronx Zoo is offering New Yorkers the opportunity to name a cockroach after their ex for Valentine’s Day.

An extract under the heading “A Gift to Remember” on the Zoo’s website, reads, “You don’t always have the right words, but you can still give them goosebumps. Name a roach for your Valentine, because roaches are forever.”

In addition, an “original” digital certificate to mark the occasion is also an option at a cost of $15, and it doesn’t stop there. Visitors are encouraged to “name a Bronx Zoo Madagascar hissing cockroach for your loved one” and “explore the collection” of other packages on offer.

For $35, visitors can “curl up with your special someone for a romantic Valentine’s Virtual Encounter with a Madagascar hissing cockroach — and a special surprise animal guest.”

Visitors are also encouraged to “make it a little wilder” by opting for the “Mystery Box” at a cost of $70. “Give them the full package this Valentine’s Day with two mystery roach-tastic gifts** (possibilities roach socks, roach beanie, roach cross-body bag, roach plush, or roach tumbler)!” a further extract reads.

It continues, “Plus, a printed certificate with their roach’s name, and a very crawly Valentine’s Virtual Encounter* on February 13, 14, or 15 with a Madagascar hissing cockroach – and a surprise animal guest.

Susie, an apparently satisfied roach namer and lover of romance, is quoted on the Bronx Zoo’s website as saying, “Naming a roach is a Valentine’s tradition for us. Roses and chocolates come and go, but roaches last an eternity – just like our love!”
